Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I thought that we had no personalised number plates here? If true, then the 22222 plate shown above must have been purely random? One chance in 99,999, or to be mathematically accurate, one chance in all of the numbers that had been allocated up to the time that car was registered.

You can get a custom plate well kind of custom since our plates are mostly numbers.

    Peugeot 407. I have seen with a --D407. BMW --D3301 for a 330i etc...

yeah but you have to book them in advance and the car cannot be registered until the normally allocated numbers have reached the number you want. no problem for a 407 and 3301 but for that 22222 they must have been waiting until the end of January to register it.

It's here since 2018 and has been stored unregistered so I doubt the wait to 22222 made much of a difference to the owner.

What's the significance to the 22222 plate? It reminds me of this feckin thing! :pac:

The plate number was reserved in advance. It didn't randomly land on it on the day he decided to register the car.

Number plates are based on the year of manufacture, not the year of registration. If you bring in an older car from abroad you get a plate based on when it was made, not when it was registered. So where di that number come from?

How do you reserve a plate in advance?

I don't know the process but it's not free you have to pay for the privilege.

    Reserving a registration number
For €1,000 you can apply to Revenue for a particular registration number for the current year.

To reserve a number, you must apply to the Central Vehicle Office. Applications must be made on or after 1 November in the year before it is intended to first register the vehicle.

If your application is not successful, your payment of €1,000 will be refunded to you.

The number and county chosen must:

be in the normal registration number format
correspond with the year and half year in which the vehicle is first registered. An application to reserve 181-D-2:
may only be made for a vehicle to be first registered in 2018
    and
correspond with the place where the applicant normally resides.
The registered owner must be the person in whose name the number was reserved. Reserved numbers are not transferable.

All registration numbers are available for reservation except the number ‘1’ in:

    Cork (161-C-1 and 162-C-1)
    Dublin (161-D-1 and 162-D-1)
    Limerick (161-L-1 and 162-L-1)
    Waterford (161-W-1 and 162-W-1).
A reserved registration number can only be assigned to a vehicle when it is reached in the normal sequence. It may not be displayed on a vehicle before it has been formally assigned by Revenue.

Its about first registration. My merc have 07 reg and it was build in 06 but sitting in garage for a year before first time registered. Abroad cars were registered abroad at some stage and when coming to Ireland they have history.

If the car has been here since 2018 then it could not have a 211D plate.

The number plate is just a registration number. Just so happens here we have the year on it. A car never registered anywhere previously will be allocated a number on first registration. That first reg number will contain the year of first (ever) registration.

There were several cars on motors forum getting silly registration numbers after sitting a year or five unregistered.

I remember some Toyotas and Opels that had newer plate than their newer or facelifted models. It happens.

so the car has been sitting here since 2018 and was only registered this year?

cars are usually registered when they are brought into the country. it would be unusual to leave a car like that sitting for more than 2 years.

But in fairness that's a different thing to saying that a car that has being in the country since 2018 could not have a 211 registration.
Either way a cracking car and kudos to the owner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,854 ✭✭✭✭MetzgerMeister

Cars are given a reg based on when they are actually registered so it's not impossible for a year or 2 old car to have a newer reg.

There was a Mazda3 MPS for sale a few years ago which is a good example. It was a 2007 MY model but had something like a 2014 license plate as it wasn't registered until then.

I'm not sure what makes people think that, you can register a car whenever you want

I seen that new Ferrari 812 yesterday. I was a bit underwhelmed with the colour and lack of noise. Very discreet, but maybe thats the way the owner wants it.

You're right my old e39 was a 1998 so that's 3 decades ago and they were around well before that.

Regarding those seats they look great from behind(carbon fibre) but I hate the white theme going on with the interior of that M3.

The front end im not gone on. Its like when cars a modified and they stick the license plate on any bit of bumper thats not hacked away or obstructing air flow

You could put a normal plate on the front of that without obstructing airflow and have it a lot neater looking.

I did something similar on my E36. It was taken off never to be refitted in about 2 hours. Got a special holder that screwed into the towing eye. Looked thoroughly daft.
