Athlone Castle looks pretty cool, would be my choice, seems to be the biggest out of the landmarks too.

Lurking and enjoying this thread, only had the time to post today.

Visited The Tin Church representing Co. Monaghan today , quirky little spot worth a visit but wouldn't be setting out from a great distance away for it solely. Stopped in at Drum Lake on the way home which was nice and one I didn't know about. Drove by Carrickmacross Workhouse too but was all locked up to the public over Covid.

    Fore Abbey please

I like the way the perspective and the cows make it look tiny, makes me think of Father Ted :p

Looks like I've missed loads, just Wicklow left?

Athlone Castle advances and will represent Westmeath

Definitely the worst accent in Ireland

It’s just the Sunny Southeast and the Garden of Ireland left now, both of which will be contested tonight. Wicklow, in particular, is stacked and will require a preliminary qualifying round. Be sure to check back in. It’s major hassle to do this on the phone!

That's a matter of opinion. I've heard worse.

Was going to wait till the end of this phase to post this - it's been an absolute eye-opener and education, and I'll be going back through the thread to take copious notes when it's over!

I missed most of it until this morning and can't wait to look over what i missed. There are places even in neighbouring counties i didn't know abiut. Like you said it's an education.

    Ooooooh.......

The Hook, because it's the oldest working lighthouse in the world (I think! - ETA I googled it just to be sure and I was right!)), and another sailing landmark that has marked our progress up and down the coast many times, and lighhouses are awesome

    or

Kilmore Quay, which has more than once been a port of refuge out of absolutely horrible weather, and has the best fish'n'chips in the country (may have something to do with having been seasick for days and you'd eat your own leg once you get to dry land)

On balance, I think the Hook get my vote. Iconic.

Yeah, that fact will do me!
That and it looking really cool

Loftus Hall, a few good choices here but I'll go with the spooky one

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,511 ✭✭✭Purgative

Dunbrody Famine Ship - I like historical things that almost let you feel it, that leave you with a vivid impression of what the people experienced.

Saltee Islands or Hook Lighthouse ?

    Decisions decisions.

    Really Really tough this.

    Going with

Loftus Hall - I would absolutely love to spend a night there.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 7,245 Mod ✭✭✭✭cdeb

Surprised the Rose Kennedy bridge didn't get a mention. (I forgot to nominate it myself... :o)

But yeah, oldest lighthouse is good enough for me - Hook Head
