Good. Would be the height of irresponsibility to have a crowd gather unnecessarily for a midnight console launch at the moment.

    Not really.
Give an allocated pickup time, pull up, show them your order details with ID and they put it into the car for you or hand it to you at the door. There would be no other shoppers about as it's just the PS5 gang there. Seems to me to be a far safer method than during normal business hours when mixing with general footfall in the same area.

I just found out I've an extra 1.5 days to take so might use them on that Thursday and Friday.
Have other days to take that I've already taken into account so since these are extra, gives me an excuse

Haha, would you fancy arriving to a smyths after midnight to collect a ps5? Just imagine the scum that would be waiting around the corner for the people walking away.

Might be okay for smaller places but wouldn't larger areas have more preorders, so you could be allocated a time of 1 or 2 in the morning.
I'm just planning on picking it up at lunch on release day

Also, you get home, set it up, install updates, install games, install game updates and go to bed angry as you can't get past the tutorial level of Demon's Souls. I'm happy going in first thing in the morning.

I'm collecting mine from Smyths in Blanch, but I am gonna hold off until around 10:30, hopefully the queue will have died down a little by then

Going to collect mine in Smyths in Carrickmines around 9.30. Hopefully not much of a queue

If there is a queue, hopefully it will move fairly quickly as people are just collecting it and not paying. On the other hand most people there will have multiple separate pre-orders for games and accessories which could hold things up.

I hope Smyths have everything ready to go for each customer. Have the PS5 console, games, accessories all sorted per customer. Then they can just make one trip

I chose to order online as my local Smyths was flanked by a halting site and that'd be really chancing fate walking out with a new console, turns out shop moved since I was there last. Lockdown is making it a better choice in either case.

Random question , I’ve a PS5 preordered in Smyths for click and collect , and I’ve also another controller ordered too. The controller is due to be released on the 12th. Will they hold the controller till the 19th does anyone know?

    cancel the controller
and the preorder it again and do home delivery you have it ready to use when you pick up the ps5.

I have the charging dock which is out on the 12th preorders. On the website it says any preorders will be held until 1st December so I think we should be fine to pick both up on the 19th.

Dunno what Smyths are gonna do that day between everyone getting a console then all other orders for toys. Has the potential to be a mess.

A friend of mine asked about getting a PS5 for his son for Xmas. Is he too late or what would people advise? Is he likely to get one? Thanks.

For anyone still looking, saw on Twitter that Smyths are saying they hope to have more PS5s available on release day for people who haven't a pre-order yet, but they can't guarantee it.

I can't link to their Tweet because I'm new, but here's a copy/paste of their reply to someone who asked:

"Hey! We are expecting the PS5 to be in stock on November 19th for people who couldn't get their hands on a pre-order. But unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee that. Please keep an eye on our social media and website for future stock allocations :)"

Queues will be mental. At least only people who have click and collect confirmed should be there..

Although they will be hard to get hold of, it will be possible.

Sony aren't shutting the factories down after launch, they will keep making them and getting them to shops as fast as they can. I expect about 1m units to be available on launch day, and a further 2-3m units reaching stores in the subsequent weeks. There's a full 5 weeks between launch and xmas, there will be multiple waves of restocking.

It's not going to be the case that you can stroll into a game store and see a big stack of units. But it will be doable. It will take effort - checking sites, watching threads like this, being ready to order immediately. etc

At a complete guess, I'd think if they have more stock on release day, you'll have to order for click and collect online given that the stores are only open for collection during level 5. But just guessing.

I’m sure that they will release the ones not collected but since they extended that until the end of the lockdown then that won’t be until the start of December

Wouldn’t imagine they will have loads but there’s definitely a few ordered as a Plan B (because payment is more or less at time of release)

I assume argos are getting stock at some stage seeing as they have a picture of a ps5 on their homepage, probably our last hope for a launch day console.

The key question is what time the stock goes live on the website?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,326 ✭✭✭jj880

"Don't wait till midnight. Be watching Argos website every minute from when the shops close the evening before launch day. They can go live at anytime after the shops close on the 18th since they can't be picked up until shops open on the 19th. As I mentioned here before, I've seen items go live on their website at 10pm the day before release."

Good post in the main ps5 thread about a week ago. Might be worth adding to the sticky thread.

Just realised the email about the preorder I got from Gamestop says they've got confirmation they won't be able to fulfil it until 2021. I ordered online a few days after they opened for preorders (missed the boat)

You joined a queue so yeah I wouldnt expect it this year. The actual preorders sold out within 30 mins on the night that they revealed prices. Queue started after that so if you ordered a few days after it then you are well low down in the queue.

What dates did the online pre orders start? I ordered in store mid August but haven't heard anything at all and the staff hadn't a clue whenever I asked. Hoping im in with a chance as I havent had an email saying otherwise but who knows at this stage. Has anyone who ordered instore got the email saying they cant get one till 2021?

I called the shop I preordered and they told me the cutoffs were different in each shop depending on volume and on model.

I seem to remember with PS4 and PS3 launch dates in November with very limited availability and then 2-3 weeks before Xmas you could pick them up anywhere.

Could be wrong but could be another marketing ploy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,910 ✭✭✭✭whatawaster

We will no doubt have a better idea come the US launch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,326 ✭✭✭jj880

I live 40 miles from my nearest big town with argos / smyths / currys etc. I have no problem cutting it fine into december for a ps5 as long as travel restrictions for click and collect are relaxed at the end of this 6 weeks of level 5 so I can get an alternative if needs be.

If restrictions arent relaxed I dont fancy relying on a home delivery to arrive before xmas any time after 10th December.

I know people have said just tell the gardai you are going to an essential retailer etc. Im not getting into that debate again as it did go overboard previously. Time will tell I suppose.

I'll need everyone who pre-ordered with GS after they opened it online a few weeks back to come back and report here if they got one on launch. I have a mental angry email ready for GS if I can't get one having pre-ordered in July, so I'll need ammo to go at them if people who pre-ordered after me get it before me! I've stuck with GS all along, defended them at times and I'm well aware of their pricing practices, but always found them good to deal with (most stores, I've visited a few other stores and can see where the terrible service comes from). But if I don't get one on release, it'll end any shopping in there ever again.

Less than 4 weeks away and still don't know if I'm getting one. Starting to get thick at this stage, but I'll also be watching Argos/HN like a hawk on the 18th just in case. I work nights, so my waking days are 4pm-9am, if it means having 4 laptops open with 4 different sites and staring at them for 12 hours, I'll fecking do it!

Problem is you're number X on your locals list and that's all that matters.

GS are probably going to allocated their total stock based on demand, every store only get's X% of their pre-ordered or % before a certain date.

You might be pre-order #51 in your local store and they only get 50 consoles, while someone else who pre-ordered ages after you in their local in September might get one.

Do you know what number you are and out of how many.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,333 ✭✭✭✭Potential-Monke

Not a clue. I haven't contacted them in a couple of weeks because the updates people are giving on here are basically the same as what the store was telling me, so I've no doubt they're still in the dark like all the other stores. I pre-ordered in July, and was told it was close to the 100 mark at that stage, but wasn't split between digital and disc, and he reckoned a lot more people went digital, whereas I want the disc one.

I might give them a shout on Tuesday just to see if they have any update. Maybe I should re-phrase my question, if anyone who pre-ordered for Click and Collect in Limerick when the site went live gets one, please post here. I just want to see if they fulfill all pre-website orders first, which is only fair imo (not in the scheme of taking pre-orders early, but because they were taking them early they should honor those first).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,475 ✭✭✭RedXIV

To be fair, I'm in a similar boat, I preordered in Feb in Dundrum and have no idea what my odds are of getting it. I've emailed them earlier today after getting a bit annoyed about it (from a dream of all things where I didn't get one :P ) so if there is any difference in the message, I'll let you know
