    Hi,

can anyone give a rough guess of the age of this plantation?

    Also, has it been thinned?

7-10 yrs, I doubt if it has been thinned yet.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Thanks for that. So probably 30 years or so before these are chopped down?

And probably still government premiums being paid on these?

Probably get premium until year 15.

It looks like they're on a mountain? My guess if it's Coilte owned they won't thin it and will clear fell it at about year 30, so roughly 23 years from now. Then it will be re-planted

However if the site is thinned, it will probably be 10 years longer before clear felling. Hope this helps.

Thanks blue5000. Why would they not thin it and clear fell in 30 years, as appose to thinning it and leaving 10 years longer?

The trees are all about 2m apart (each way) - does this show its not been thinned?

Not thinned yet if they're all 2m apart. I suppose not thinning is because it costs nearly as much to do a first thinning as what the trees removed are worth. The only benefit is better growth rates in the remaining trees.

Just regarding a forest that has been cleared....does it have to be replanted?

Sown > 30 years ago and being cleared now.

I was wondering really if the land is worth anything now?

It's really close to me and I am not mad keen on the idea of it being replanted so was wondering could I buy it myself and do what I like with it?

Possibly suffice as rough grazing with entitlements on it etc. and site potential.

Has to be re-planted, or the equivalent area planted instead.

Is another option "or all grants repaid"?

If so, a decent dose of inflation in the next 30 years might change the calculations.

OK thanks. If I bought that I'd have to either plant that or I could plant an equivalent area of my own somewhere else?

Would Agroforestry count at all towards it?

Sorry, I don't know. Johnstown castle might be your best bet for an answer.
