Student nurses on placement WILL be paid for duration of Covid-19 crisis

HEALTH MINISTER SIMON Harris has said that student nurses and midwives completing placements during the Covid-19 outbreak will be paid.

Hundreds of student nurses across the country are set to begin their unpaid work placements this month and some have already started.

Although this is a common practice – doing unpaid work to earn enough hours to become fully qualified – the public health crisis affecting the country led to calls for this to be changed.

Harris has now confirmed that all student nurses and midwives will be offered a contract as a healthcare assistant (HCA) and be paid accordingly. HCAs are paid €28,000 a year.

P.S If you think its only people on social media outraged, you have another thing coming. Everybodys talking about it this morning saying its a scandal

And they are paid where they are working as HCAs.

Where and when they are not working as HCAs and are on normal student placements, they are not being paid.

They would be paid for the duration of the crisis where they are working as HCAs. Be honest and set the full facts out.

They are not now working as HCAs, hence they are not being paid. It really is a success story the way the HSE has adapted to the Covid-19 crisis and doesn't need the same level of assistance from student nurses in December that it did in March.

    The Spin Doctor Blanch.

Do you agree that your party The Greens have voted against this motion and not 1 of their TDs has the balls to come out and say why they voted against it?

Simon Harris said STUDENT NURSES WOULD BE PAID FOR THE DURATION OF THE COVID CRISIS

"student nurses and midwives will be offered a contract as a Healthcare Assistant and be paid for their work"

Surely the contract should have been until the situation was under control?

Harris lied and then voted against paying them last night.

A scumbag and a knacker. Hope he gets ill and a student nurse has to look after him

FG the party of unspoken disclaimers. Maybe RTE should fact check them in real time like CNN do Trump. Compulsive lying.

What is the problem here? student nurses have never got paid. Yes they got paid during the emergency but that is not the case anymore. According to the post I seen when they got paid over 900 was in hospital with Covid and now less than 300 so regular staff can pay for it.
Covid is not going away, it will be here for years did student nurses really think they would get paid forever? for one we don't generate enough taxes to pay for the nurses and if we pay the nurses then we have to pay student everyone and the country would be crippled.

This is another blow everything out of proportion because someone doesn't get their way. I would prefer the money been used for the student nurses gets invested back into the HSE. Not sure if that has been announced.

I'm not doubting he may have said it, but three things:

    1. You are using the headline of an article and claiming that is a direct quote from Harris as your "facts" argument, without anything to suggest the headline is a direct quote of what was said by Harris.
    2. He is no longer minister for health and is required to follow the government whip.
    3. This is a different government from when he may have said those words.

So not sure what blame can be leveled at him personally here. People flinging mud hoping something sticks really, and then thinking everyone agrees with them because they are stuck in a social media echo chamber.

The numbers are down, if they are gone from 900+ to less than 300 the crisis is over. When did you expect to get paid till?

Plus the government you are talking about no longer exists. It is a new government
Student nurses never got paid during work experience. If you expected that when getting hired I am afraid you were always going to get a hop

    1. His exact words were ""This is an offer and not an obligation. But I know so many of our student nurses want to play their role as we navigate our way through these difficult times.

"Our healthcare professionals have shown immense leadership and I will do everything I can to support them."

To expect students to enter that area without pay, it’s unrealistic and unfair.

    2. Loads of TDs who have felt strongly about something have went against it before.

    3. The vote yesterday was to pay them, he said they would be paid, he voted AGAINST IT

A SCUMBAG in a Govt of SCUMBAGS

Or maybe the TD's are populist careless speakers and are promising things they later have to renage on later quietly. They're looking to make headlines in grand gestures.

There's clear bias in your post with the name calling, so not sure if there is any point in engaging in a back and forth here. If you think they are scumbags then you're not exactly going to look at the facts of the matter and form a coherent debate.

Really these student don't really understand what is going on

Meanwhile, final-year student nurse Áine said she is on her ‘supernumerary placement’ which means that she is supposed to be there, “purely to be taught, to observe and to learn.”

“When the hospital environment is so busy, when the staff are so stressed, the opportunities for learning decrease significantly and the opportunity to ask questions disappears,” she said.

“You are there as an extra pair of hands and you’re used as an extra pair of hands so we should have some sort of financial compensation for that.

Hate to tell Aine but a student nurse in her final year was always seen as an extra member of staff, it was never to swan around doing nothing and asking the odd question.

Apprentices get paid dependent on what level they're at, surely it should be the same for student nurses who put in long hours carrying out duties beyond what they are supposed to.

Make TD's and Senators take a pay cut and cut their 'expenses' to help pay for it. Get rid of all the useless f**ks in middle management in the HSE and use that money to pay for it.

Would you work 13 hour shifts for nothing?

Please note I am all for nurses getting a pay rise. They are the ones doing the work here and lets not forget that.

So it's Aine's fault they are understaffed and she should be willing to do the work unpaid, aye dead on.

Why because they won't work long shifts while working in premises infected with a dangerous virus for free? Sounds to me like the youth are wising up.

Maybe you don't understand but this has always been the way with nurses. This is nothing new. The join the profession and are told up front they won't get paid. If you want to try and turn this into some big issue then maybe you should have started it years ago when all nurses done the same
This is another load of bulls**t, if a student enter nursing and got told they would be paid during training and then it was stopped yes they would have a case but that didn't happen.

Yes maybe TD's should reduce expenses. Sinn Fein TD claiming full expenses and he lives in Dublin. F**King disgusting.

If she is doing work she should be paid.

When I did my third placement in college in IT, we got paid.

    What's the difference?

Student nurses ALWAYS do work experience. This is nothing new. They are always ptu onto wards and seen as a extra pair of hands to help the nurses. NOTHING has changed.

They never got paid before, this is clear before they start the course. What is so confusing about this?
