The only party down here who could have delivered an all-Ireland approach was Sinn Fein, and it required two things

    (1) Sinn Fein backing the Irish government approach
    (2) Sinn Fein persuading its partners in the North to adopt the same approach.

They were incapable of either. In fact, they made fools of themselves, simultaneously supporting or opposing the same measures depending on whether they were North or South, and at one time wanting to close schools while keeping pubs and bookies open. You couldn’t make up that level of ineptitude and constant playing politics with people’s deaths.

Getting back on topic, what it demonstrates is that we have been extremely lucky to have this government in place over the last year.

Never read such nonsense in my life. SF have been calling for travel restrictions from the start and for the rules to be enforced this is easy stuff. They also reached out to have the flights restricted in the north, multiple times in December in fact. Now tell me. How many times has FFG contacted westminster about tidying up it's act? How many times did FFG contact Arlene to go for an all Ireland approach?

Here's a HSE webpage someone archived telling us how to safely dine, visit pubs and socialise over Christmas. Note it's now removed from the official website.

    Truth hurts, I am afraid.

Sinn Fein have failed this country throughout the pandemic.

The journalists that promoted spin should really be challenged on what they peddled back in October. Undermining the actual experts with access to the most relevant data now looks incredible in hindsight. Look at this from Matt Cooper for example. What we're the public to think of health advice when this was what leading media personnel were saying?

"‘What tosh!’ — Leo was right to put NPHET in its place...."

"But maybe NPHET also needed to be put in its place publicly so it will be more careful in its future actions"

God, they're awful quiet about it really.
They send out the cockadoodle doo brigade to stir the pot, because they know they can't say fcuk all themselves.
Lots of them on here tonight.

Cant see Donnelly lasting much longer as minister if the numbers keep rising,

If you look at media outside RTE/Virgin/Indo, local radio have been much more effective in delivering actual news, RTE need a huge clear out, Miriam O'Calaghan, for instance is completely compromised but allowed to take part in news programmes

I think heads need to roll now. It turns out the IT systems are not fit for purpose.

It speaks volumes that the usual government cult backers in here are sheepish and silent now hoping for any distraction when the virus it out of control and government policy has failed. For months it was covid outrage and point scoring when it suited them.

This has been addressed many times with you - the virus is better controlled here than in Northern Ireland or Great Britain.

Now unless you want to take a partitionist position and argue that the people of Northern Ireland are somehow different to the people here, then the difference in Covid-19 between the two jurisdictions (the North being far far worse) is the relative performances of the two governments.

There are very few ways of judging the performance of the government during a pandemic other than in comparison with its peers - those countries nearest and under similar circumstances.

The government will make mistakes, and people will die, but the Sinn Fein supporters in glasshouses are not the ones to be throwing stones.

If this spirals out of control in the next few weeks and we are parking refrigerated trailers outside the hospitals will you still be blaming others for the failures of the current and previous government?

It'll be lack of personal responsibility then.

Just saw on the Beeb that Israel has administered the vaccine to 12 percent of the population already. Government here has already told us we'll be waiting until autumn for mass population wide vaccination

The Chuckle Brothers will be along to tell us that we shouldn't be compared to Israel because of the falafel in the national diet or something and that makes things COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

If that is the case, we will have sunk to the levels of Northern Ireland.

Israel will only be counting Israeli citizens in that, they won't be including all of the Palestinians in the count of those who are vaccinated. Interesting that you use them as a comparator, probably the most sectarian country in the world.

Blanch, you've been outboxed and outpointed on all three scorecards. Take the L.

So for the sake of the island an all island approach would make the most sense.
Its unfortunate DUP/FG aren't pushing for it.
No border closure would work as well.

Its the usual FF/FG brand incompetence. They are pretty adept at funnelling money to pals but woeful at basic governance and organisation.
Watch the Brexit ****show unfold like they only heard about it yesterday

Maybe the Greens support the murdering Israel regime? TBF a lot in common with the British. Shooting unarmed civilians, treating the indigenous people like dirt, blowing up schools and the like.

Heads need to roll because our health system is caught out by the pandemic??!!

An important point in this article “What is clear are the measures that the Government has now mandated and the behaviours that we as individuals need to observe. Everyone needs to stay at home other than for essential work or care." https://www.rte.ie/news/2021/0101/1187177-covid-19/

10 months to get ready and they buy a load of ahitty ventilators. Meanwhile the antiquated computer system can't count above 2000. Got bless the nurses and doctors. They are doing a great job despite government incompetence.

Little point bolting that stable door now, That horse galloped away ages ago! They refused to listen to the experts in early December. This is the predicted consequence!

People won’t listen to the government, so I doubt that they’d bother listening to the experts. Much more fun attending house parties or visiting the local shebeen and share the virus!

Hundreds of vaccine shots wasted in Finland due to errors in dosage rates. I blame Michael Martin for not warning Helsinki sooner. It's a disgrace.

The govt were advised two things in early December, level 5 lockdown and keep hospitality closed. They chose neither and this is the exact outcome with super spreading events being traced back to gastro pubs!

If the government is free to reject expert advice and even dismiss them on live tv you'd want to be a right moron to expect ordinary people to adhere to expert advice.

Seriously Blanch - you aren't doing your cause any favours by on the one hand pointing the failure finger at a deeply sectarian society where the really important decisions are still made at a remove due to continued sectarian in-fighting (*coff coff DUP blocking health measures), and then trying to be holier than down when someone else uses a deeply sectarian society to make a point.

Or is it that some sectarianism is ok with you?
