We have a 2.0 Mk3 Avensis diesel, they don't really do much more than 45 mpg on main roads and motorways in my experience.

I don't have any experience with the latest Passat but in the previous car (the B7) the 1.6 is woefully underpowered and definitely not any more fuel efficient than the Avensis. A 2.0 will be much nicer to drive and won't use any more fuel in the real world, either - unless you're going to drive it around town in which case you should be looking at petrol or some sort of hybrid.

You can sort of gauge it by the tax. If it’s €280 tax it probably isn’t as economical as a car that has €200 tax.

There are exceptions of course, and a smaller engined diesel with a 5 speed box mightn’t actually give great real world results.

If you're not doing motorway driving, nothing will beat citreon C5 1.6 for mpg (5 speed) or the Fluence/Megane

I have a 2010 2.0 diesel but don’t find it very economical. Was set on a 1.6 Diesel Passat for economy purposes. I drive average 500km a week. 2 kids also. If a 2.0 Passat is as economical as a 1.6, I’d definitely get one. Also open to an Octavia or Superb.

Over the last 3 weeks i got 655 klms for €50 diesel.. Car is a 2010 avensis 2.0 diesel. That was only city driving and about 42mpg
How much does it cost you to drive the 500 klms or did you ever work out your mpg.

    What about a C4? Or a C3?

Honda civic 1.6 will beat both

If I actually have extra cash before I bought the fluence, I would have bought a civic, they look class. Colour Black, dark grey or dark blue.

How long will it take for the prices of civics go down?

    Strangely, not as fuel efficient.
That's according to a Citroen mechanic buddy

    Doesn’t really make sense.
