Whatever happened to no visitors to houses being a "game changer"? It's not even been a week to see if this changes things.

NPHET have made the pressure unbearable on them. We aren't even giving time to see if current restrictions will have an effect. It's madness

Wales gone into a "Firebreak" lockdown. I swear these names are getting more pretentious by the week.

Firebreak is slightly better than circuit breaker.

Though, being Wales its a wonder they didnt call it a sheep pen or ring fence.

It's not them doing the recommending, although a lot of NPHET is HSE people.

It is all absolute bull, there are no doubt less people in hospital today then last year of the year before.

6 weeks lockdown on the people is a complete travesty.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Micheal just came on the news and said "just to confirm everything the media reported is true, its level 5 for six weeks" rather than the absolute drivel he normally spits before finally getting to the point?

Funny, I actually find him far better than Leo. Who'd waffle on for five or ten minutes, sneak in a Churchill reference or a film quote for the lols, before actually getting on with the announcement that would seriously impact many people's lives. Main thing is to look good in the history books, who cares about the plebs now

this is bull crap. They are doing this on purpose then to scare everyone, and then at 6 Meehole will announce level 4ish and ppl will be happy! feck sake....

yep usual routine, for everything kite fly the worst case, reduce it a bit and everyone happy, honestly they just take us for fools.

Government have to be careful here. Rightly or wrongly, once Level 5 is announced, our unions will be on that straight away. Can’t see schools lasting at all under level 5.

It's the fact it's for six weeks though. Wales is announcing it for two weeks. Six weeks is very long for a lot of people who'll be unemployed from this, not to mention the many other side effects.

Wales two weeks though is farcical. They needed to be honest with their population. Either it'll be two weeks but not a greatly effective measure or at least four to six weeks to work effectively.

Now journalists are saying level 5. Pure guessing by them. I suppose best to wait for official news this evening.

Pragmatism means taking a wide view of the issues and making decisions and predictions based on what is practical and is most likely to have the most positive outcome.

The pragmatic view here would be to sit on this until the end of the week. The chaos they're planning on unleashing might all be for naught. Waiting another couple of days before imposing a lockdown won't make a huge difference in the grand scheme.

One American study concluded that about 40,000 lives would have been saved by locking down 2 weeks earlier. So a few days can make a huge difference in the grand scheme. We've been waiting and seeing for some time already since NPHET first recommended level 5 and things have just continued to get worse. I understand that it looks like the rate might be starting to level off under level 3, but that's based on a small amount of data and the base is already too high now. There's also a lag between infections, hospital admissions and deaths, so a small drop in the last couple of days still means hospitals will continue worsening.

Even if the data does prove correct, and Level 3 doest start to consistently show a 0.1% drop in infection rate per week, that means we're still in a pretty bad place for months to come. A stronger lockdown could get us to a healthier place much more quickly.

1300 people a day will top themselves because of a few weeks in level 5?

1300 people a day are dying from Covid?

Relax you'll have them closed for a week anyway.

I doubt they're guessing. The government is leaky as a sieve.

Which is utterly ridiculous when you think about it. Working in a school under level 5 is much safer than working in a school under level 3 or lower, since the people attending class are far less likely to have come in contact with the virus outside of the school in order to bring it in.

Seems as if government have decided that they won't muddy the waters with a level 4 plus and are just going to go for it for 6 weeks until 1st December.

You can be dam sure that doesn't get an extension so close to Christmas.

Level 5 is no good if we still allow gits like this to travel abroad and come back.

And it may not work as advertised. Even if it does Level 4 is the next one down so that's another 4 weeks of that. See you in January!

    This is a complete disaster

This will ruin a large number of peoples lives for the foreseeable

Some will never recover from this, personally and financially

There is a ****show coming, this won't be over for a long time. The HSE needs to be gutted when this is done. All those wasteful middle and upper management ***** need to be ****ed out on their holes.

What's the point of closing off licenses early? I know the reason behind it would be to curb house parties but that measure isn't going to do it. The government would be better off implementing closures on all off licences for the 4 weeks. They can close other businesses, why not off licences. That's coming from someone who would consider dipping into a bottle of spirit for a glass or 2 to be fairly essential.

No late night going for extra booze for just in time and running out of booze parties :D

The restricted off-licence times are a good one. What will an 8pm cut off do but bottleneck crowds? Anyone who's going to drink will buy it regardless but now they just have a smaller window of time.

Theyve had 2 weeks being pragmatic, plus the rest of this week by the sounds of things.

Completely agree - But this IS a national health emergency - They can obviously see further down the pipe and the outcome obviously isn't good so they need to do something.

Teachers unions will have schools shut down I reckon if L5 is officially announced.
