This is the product of decades of chronic mistreatment in our health system. We stuck our ears in the sand. Then, after the first wave in March we dug even deeper into the sand.

I hate where we are and don't see any easy way out. We don't have a choice.

As it see it only testing capacity was adequately improved. 100k tests per week is pretty good. Contact tracing was overwhelmed far too quickly. Health care capacity I'm more sympathetic for as something that intrinsically complicated cannot scale up in a matter of months.

Contact tracing, failure of clear concise communication and lack of admonishment for severe breaches has stung us deeply.

This was always going to be a tough winter. We just helped make it much tougher than it should have been. :(

The government truly failed over the summer in relation to hospital capacity. A friend of mine is an ICU doctor/intensivist and was very angry about it.
They spent 5 months in talks to create the coalition of chaos and then got nothing done.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth House?

Surely the cabinet could be told to turn off their phones during a meeting? the leaks are honestly ridiculous

Clearly the will isn’t there. The pay back from the relevant journalists / media outlets is too great.

Suppose I’ll have to buy 6 weeks worth of food so seen as closest shop to me is 8kms!
And that’s a small convenience store that will fleece me for weekly shop compared to large Tesco 13km away!

We're not going back to these type of posts are we?

The 5k relates to exercise.......you are not expected to die of malnutrition if the shop is 5.1k away!!!

I'm glad I did a bit of shopping yesterday, the street is looking busy right now, I imagine it will be a mad town tomorrow

"Testing isnt happening" -> countys tested -> "its one too many"

    What?

I didn't say 'testing wasn't happening' You said it was. I mentioned that the Louth captain said the team hadn't been tested.

If the level 3 + household visit ban is actually working and we see a reduction in cases in 7 days, are they going claim this as a victory of level 5?

Bunch of chancers, lock us up for 6 weeks- This is worse than China

    Er...

In Wuhan they welded people into apartment blocks...

    So no, no it isn't.

But you probably knew that already, so carry on.

I need to go shopping this afternoon. Christ. It's going to be like the walking dead.

I don't know why people are shocked at level 5 for 6 weeks.

Two weeks ago NPHET made that recommendation. On that day there were 364 cases. Yesterday there were 1284. That's an increase of more than 300%.

The epidemic is totally out of control.

Going to level 4 for 3-4 weeks is not going to get a handle on it. I'd be fairly confident that eventually schools will be closed too, for all the endless back and forth arguing about it on here.

Whilst I support these much needed measures they are useless without huge fines and enforcement for the asshats breaking them.

Going to level eleventy-six isn't going to help much either if they continue to make random exceptions.

    False

They welded that door closed to get people to use front door where heat scanners had been placed, no one was welded into apartments

Same as all those dead body pics and people dropping dead

    Fake news

Schools will close in November. Probably as extension to mid-term. Unions and teachers will demand it.

Not to be that guy, but totally out of control is just hyperbole. You'd swear people were dropping in the streets.

Its increasing at a worrying level, not out of control..

Yes, they will keep them open till the mid-term then not bring them back afterwards.

It's clear and evident that is their plan imo.

Anyone buying more than one 6 pack of bog roll should be shot, not to preserve stocks but as punishment for sheer brainless herd like thinking

If figures are still high in 2-3 weeks, it will be about the only card left to play:(

It’s mad already. I needed to pick up a few things I forgot yesterday and the SuperValu was bedlam. The amount of lads bringing out trolly loads of beer was a sight to be seen.

People thought it would magically disappear somehow at level 3 despite the absolute experts in the field saying it wouldn't. Bizarre

Surprised there aren't people on here calling for that to happen in ireland too. I mean, according to posts over the past few days, some people want army in the streets, the guards to have powers to enter your home willy nilly and those who might be infected to have indelible marks on their foreheads so everyone knows if they are breaking quarantine. Id say those types would love a bit of welding people in too. Crazy stuff altogether.

Going to level eleventy-six isn't going to help much either if they continue to make random exceptions.

And do nothing to increase testing, improve tracing, or increase the hospital capacity.

All the things we were told the original lockdown was to buy them time for.

The government have utterly failed the people of Ireland. They have shown no ability to do anything to combat the virus other than national lockdown.

Where are you seeing support for further restrictions from the civil service and those on the dole?

Absolutely ridiculous, and it all it does is punish those of us already abiding by the guidelines. I’m sure the house parties will still be rocking!
I do my weekly shop in Dunnes every week which is over 20km from my home. They have a larger selection of gluten-free products that my local Supervalu doesn’t have, and which is generally a rubbish supermarket in comparison.
I’ll be damned if the guards tell me to turn back and shop there instead.

I don’t live with 5km of a supermarket. Food shopping is essential.

    Widespread community transmission.

    They can't control it.

It is, quite literally, out of control.

The public as a whole had played a blinder. There's always going to be some bad apples but overall I think we've done our jobs.

Unfortunately we're basically in a position where we're on the Titanic and the captain of the ship is telling us to sort out the fact we're heading towards an iceberg. There has been zero accountability from government for how much of a balls they've made of this.

I agree a majority of people have common sense. However, it seems to me that a significant amount of people did not follow the guidance which is why level 3 hasn't worked out. Dr. Glynn last week provided a number of metrics which indicated that the introduction of level 3 had little or no overall impact on people's behavior.

When the government introduced level 3 in an attempt to slow the virus spreading but the virus actually continued to spread faster, either level 3 isn't sufficient or a lot of people are ignoring level 3. I think it is the latter.
