What do you want the media to say?

This is the kicker. If people have followed the level 2 guidelines strickly, we wouldn't have a issue now.

One size fits all guidelines are difficult. They have a problem with large gatherings and house parties, but close pubs/restaurants which can be controlled to prevent large gatherings.

You honestly cannot say the media is ignoring schools, we see cases in the news everyday.

At 1000 cases a day I don't think the media can start listing every company, shop, cafe, school, sports club etc... That has had a cluster.

Play dates account for adults interacting also without protocols in the family home, and could involve sharing lifts, etc.

Have you been near any of your local schools at opening or closing times?

The one near me is chaos outside, parents and children everywhere, no social distancing/masks et

GAA never stopped during level 3.

Only last week it has started cutting back.

Dublin has been on level 3 for weeks now and it has made feck all inroads.

Still no exponential increase in deaths. How are the hospital statistics today?

Very obvious that there is no stopping this virus from spreading in a democratic state.

Depends who Amárach talk to, I suppose.

I agree, I do think shops & businesses who are very strict in my area at the moment re numbers being allowed in, distancing, etc., shouldn’t be closed. Especially in the run up to Christmas.
I think certain groups need the threat of fines for not heeding restrictions. They’re just not heeding any of the advice.

Today is day 7 of additional restrictions

NPHET have consistently said any changes in restrictions or easing restrictions take 10-14 days minimum for any effect to be noticed

    And Dublin’s excuse?

I have a friend who is a teacher who has been tested, waiting results and does absolutely nothing outside of school. If they got it, they got it from the school.

Not just that, there is no notifications to children or parents or teachers with regards to testing. He actually said a parent came up to him last week to say "oh Johnny was tested, just wanted to let you know they were negative" . He said nobody told him Johnny was even being tested or awaiting results. There really is a sense that there is total efforts to suppress anything that even hints that schools maybe be a problem.

I am not singling out schools as "THE" problem, but there is alot of questions over the manner in which schools are being shielded from scrutiny.

I've said before, it was the wrong message to be blaming house parties, implied it was just drunken get togethers that caused the spread.
They should have been banging the drum about reducing indoor gatherings and meet ups for the last 6 weeks.

Exactlym The whole house party thing is being overblown and they're clearly other causes at play here.

    Some happened only last weekend.

Can take 14 days to get symptoms.

Think of the spread during those 14 days.

Club games were shut down on the 5th of October so last club games were on not last weekend

Last ones would have been on the 4th

The point about 14 day is valid about games on weekend of the 4th

Can't believe how quickly it's going out of control in Europe, average about 300-350 ICU admissions every 24 hours in the EU now, about 1.5%-2% of the total EU ICU capacity disappearing every 2 days. Europe is very quickly going to ****

Was listening to a virus expert on BBC world news service a few weeks back who said she couldn't believe the lack of preparations from major European nations for what she called "a tsunami of cases and deaths" this winter that would dwarf what has come before

Her biggest worry was people moving indoors to socialise and continued to say we had gotten lucky with the virus hitting as spring came this year. She also said the situation in the US northern states would become equally as bad.

At the time i thought she was being dramatic as i was still in the denial camp hoping the virus would mutate to a less lethal strain. Fcuk i hope she is wrong.

Have Donegal’s numbers reduced slightly? I haven’t been keeping up, they had 29 today

Slightly indeed. 7 day average for Donegal is 38 cases per day. This time last week 42 cases per day average.

Level 3 hasn't done much for Meath or Cork for that matter, today's numbers not persuading me Level 3 has made the slightest difference and Dublin as bad as ever incidentally

Absolutely nothing? Doesn't go to shops, does nothing? Gets up.. goes to school, comes home and lives alone? Sits in the house all weekend and goes nowhere? Absolutely nothing?

When cases exploded in meat factories it was headline news. When it happens in schools its not being mentioned in the same way. There is no proper open discussion in the media regards schools.

The principal of a Northern secondary school today had a good interview on the BBC.

I can't find it at the moment but I will summarise.

The school is the only place teenagers are forced to socially distance or wear mask. They leave school property take off masks and distances fall from being 2 metres apart to shoulder walking shoulder to shoulder.

He drives in his school area and recognises throngs of his students walking together on the street standing around or going in and out of houses.

In his opinion schools are the best option to control covid 19 amoung teenagers. Parents have refused to police their children.

I've no idea if he is right. I have my dou ts but it's an interesting view point.

Edit: I am sure that there is a degree of being right in his point. If school kids start having houseparties instead of school days things will be worse. However I'm not sure a school can be safe.

That’s not the schools fault. They have strict procedures & if the public aren’t adhering to them perhaps a drive by of the local Gardai could help focus minds.
Don’t get me wrong, I do think if there’s high community transmission, and test & especially trace seems to be becoming overwhelmed we have a problem. Cases will not be tracked and will find their way to vulnerable.
I would favour plans being put in place for a blended model now, should it be needed. Let schools run to mid term and give them a chance to get it set up for after mid term. That way, numbers in schools would be reduced without cutting off children from their education completely. It’s not a perfect solution - but could be a compromise during a wave like this.

    How many of them died?

    How many did they infect?
How many did they infect who might require ICU or might die?

Not coming down enough but Dublin used to be 50-60% of national cases

That's well down but yes Dublin not working as well as hoped

That's not to say level 3 won't work elsewhere

On a related note - does any one really believe the entire country is having one big piss up non stop for the last 6 weeks ??? I must live in the most boring estate in the country. There seems to be this steadfast belief that the spread is due to house parties and nothing else.

They are looking after a sick parent, when I say nothing, I mean nothing where you would say "aha, sure he likes a pint" etc. They are more cautious then the average person.
