It's only the last 20 years that Chelsea have passed us out and the last 10 that City have. Spurs were a much bigger club than either for a lot of that century you talk about.

Right place at the right time. If it were 20 years ago it would be the likes of Valencia instead of Atletico, Leeds instead of City. Lazio and Roma would have been there instead of Spurs and Chelsea. Deportivo La Coruna may have been in with a shout.

Yerra by that that logic, they should have looked at inviting Everton.

Wonder will you still be saying "us" if this thing actually happens!?

Doesn't that highlight the moral bankruptcy that is a closed shop with no promotion/relegation?

That's another wrong of the new plan; they want to perpetually lock in massive earnings and a seat at the top table for a select few clubs, based solely on their finances in the 2010s.

I know this has been happening "organically" for the last few years anyway with more and more money and trophies going to a smaller and smaller number of clubs, and the deck being stacked in their favour, but at least in theory a widely held principle of sport remained; it didn't matter what your history was, at the start of each season you had the same amount of points as everyone else in your league and could suffer the same consequences as everyone else if your results were poor enough.

Now though it's proposed that because of their strong performance in the 2010s, they are except from any sporting consequences for all eternity.

A game of poker between the big clubs and Uefa to see who will blink first.

Big clubs flexing their muscles and trying to get a bigger cut of the pie.

I don't believe this Super League is in any way a realistic option.

Well to answer your original question, spurs are in because they've been top 6 in England for pretty much the last 15 years now.

Dunno. Be interested to see the plan. On the face of it, I'm not too keen. Feels a step too far in the greed stakes.

20 years ago ther was lots of internet rumours about a Super league , Villa and Newcastle were in the mix , nothing happened.

This has more leggs, but seams odd to comeout the night before UIEFA anouncement of new CL format.
And one hour later no official news. Im done.

If it's just a proposal to start their own European Cup/Champions League will football have regained it's soul?

I love the Champions League and wouldn't change the way it is but is there a chance that everyone has massively over reacted here before the statement has been released?

Seems the 9.30 was in relation to the ECA statement not the announcement of the Super League. Sunday night at 9.30 would've been a bit of a strange time to announce such a thing.

    Ah come on now

People were saying PL would be death of football. Expanded CL. Utd going to WCC instead of FA Cup was the end.

Football is an entertainment business . Covid has proved it can be played without fans, so just home fans seems reasonable.

Supporters, especially those not dedicated to purely one club, will match the biggest matches.

And sponsors will pay to be involved.

There is no promotion or relegation in NFL and its the biggest sports franchise in the world.

For any of these clubs, relegation isn't a thing, except they hear it happens.

Yup but the NFL doesn't have the same deep rooted tribalism that is brought by a simple thing such as geography that football has.

NFL teams move, when better offers come along. It's huge because it has its own massive home market to sell to and is entirely insular. There is a reason to tank too, there with the draft. What if team is like the browns in this and they can't try and draft their way out of it? They're now going abroad more often and talking about having a London franchise and all sorts? But why. It's also kind of a niche sport compared to football in terms of sheer numbers of professional players.

UK home office could possibly have a say too and simply deny work permits to players if their teams are not in the league. Probably wouldn't, but it's a threat they can easily make

The Premier League has always been part of the English football pyramid. We've seen plenty of examples of clubs rising through the pyramid to the PL. The Champions League is open to every country in Europe.

This proposal is closed competition of the biggest clubs outside existing national and UEFA structures. That's a completely different ballgame.

The hilarious thing about the reaction of the Premier league and UEFA is that they have created this situation over the last three decades themselves. UEFA in particular. They have made the sport into an intrinsically elitist entity, allowed it to metastasize into what it is today, it's already a hop skip and a jump from this super league idea.

Look at the supposed top leagues in Europe, Italy, Juventus have won the league every year for so long it's ridiculous, same with France, PSG have it seen up every year, Spain is a duopoly occasionally interrupted by the likes of athletico and Germany is so dominated by Bayern (who strangely oppose the super league, probably because they'd be the smallest fish in that big pond, so don't for a moment be fooled into thinking they're opposed to it for altruistic reasons) it's comical.

The complete and utter failure of FFP in particular has led to this situation, big money owners do as they please, look at City getting away with everything over the last few years. FFP had no teeth and now the scumbag owners see an opportunity to do away with any over sight.

The whole idea of a Super League stinks and it should never be allowed never materialize as with any luck these greedy swines will begin to face backlash beyond what they felt was possible but this needs to be a wake up call to how the sport should be governed going forward. Caps on spending, wages etc need to be introduced. Football is like the wild West, the money being thrown around is not sustainable and it's high time this changed.

Jesus, we nearly saw Newcastle get taken over by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia last summer. You could be guaranteed they'd have their name in the hat for this had that happened.

Yet another example of why these club owners should be made answerable before they purchase clubs as playthings. The sport needs proper governance, this is the wake up call.

    Glazers Out!

    This, a million times over.

It's entertainment, cand a European Super League will be entertainment.

Why are people so defensive about promotion and relegation anyway ?
    Because it's been around for 120+years ?

In all honesty do the likes of Fulham, Sheffield Utd, Hull, Wigan, Derby, Middlesborough really add anything to the league ?

Wouldn't it be better if you had a competitive league rather than cannon fodder going up and down every year.

It has done the NFL no harm.

The PL was created for the cash (ironically with the help of Greg Dyke at ITV), they knew SKY was coming with a massive cheque and that TV deals would transform their fortunes.

It’s the ‘no possibility of relegation’ for the chosen few which is the objectionable bit.

The thrill of playing a big club in Europe once a season will be lost. It will become mundane, the entertainment will be short lived.

Essentially, if we look at how European football has progressed in recent times, we'll likely see one club dominating every year most likely Real Madrid.

So I hope you're looking forward to watching that year in year out.

FFP was nonsense from the outset anyway and just served to protect Real, Man Utd et Al's place at the top table and made it harder for anyone investing in a club to do compete.

It's the traditional powerhouses, and not the new money clubs that have played the larger role in going down this road. They got a whiff of the money it could all bring in the 90s and don't want to share the profits.

If they end up being the last few clubs going I wouldnt be watching them

But who gets this so called trill of playing a big club in Europe once a season.

The way I see it the UCL is dominated by the same clubs every year.
