I have a G7 32" and the VA panel in it is better than my previous IPS panel imo.

Hardware unboxed lean towards VA panels.

In fairness it's a rapidly changing market. That's a fairly old video that doesn't have any of what is considered todays top end monitors on it.

IPS reclaimed the crown with the modern high gamut, high refresh and low response times that made TN fairly irrelevant leaving only IPS glow and lower than VA contrast as the negative.

VA monitors are usually curved which is a negative on a smaller panel but a positive on big ultrawides. The colour range isn't quite as wide as a good IPS but the contrast is generally way better. At least double that of a good IPS and TN panel. The biggest negative was/is lower response times and slow dark transitions leaving inverse ghosting which has for the most part been solved with Samsungs latest VA's although it's still a bit slow compared to IPS on the darkest blacks.
Have yo disagree on the G9 in terms of the width and curve, very tempted to buy one but the 5700XT would not be up to driving it.

That monitor is 3080, 6800xt, 3090 territory or bust with upgrading to the latest high end cards when they release being a must to get the most out of it. You're gonna want the best available gaming cpu's to go with it as well. The wide field of view puts a lot more strain on the cpu and gpu than standard 16/9 aspects even at 4k. If you have the cash and desk space for such a beast this is the best possible gaming setup you can get atm imo.

The curve on the G9 is perfect, flatter ones make you have to turn your head rather than move your eyes. Combined with the other specs its an almost perfect screen, now that the issues are sorted its even better. Bit pricey but a stunner.

Fitz did you notice the inverse ghosting / slow dark transitions on it? Did you try setting it at 200hz to for the most part fix the problem according to hardware unboxed.

    Havn't noticed that issue

Currently eying up a new monitor , to be used for working from home office , document type work for 7.5 hours a day and small bit of gaming at weekends .

    Budget is 600-800€.

The Samsung G7 32 is tempting but I haven't owned a VA panel before and unsure of their performance for office type work all day.

Outside of that it's not an ultrawide but the LG27gl850 is really well regarded and the IPS panel may be better when using it for office work all day.

Cleaned up the space with a monitor riser from Flying Elephant.

if you know someone working there that can get you an employee discount to stack you can get a pretty sizeable chunk off that.

Cant decide between AOC AGON AG353UCG and the Alienware 34. I do love good blacks and contrast.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

You want VA then in which case I'd go for something from the Samsung G line.

They make the best VA's unless some of those are using those same Samsung panels.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Yeah I think so. ALthough the AOC I mentioned is not shipping to Ireland from Overclockers which is disappointing.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

Feck it I went with the Alienware. Got then down to 1100€. It’s so so hard to get computer stock at the moment. Nothing on Amazon has a delivery date. Should be good anyway. Managed to snag a pre built pc specialist 3070for deliver this week too. Sweet!

My AW38 arrived last week. Just about fits in my desk alcove! It's a savage monitor and I'm really happy with it for work, PC and PS4 gaming.

I did buy a fancy monitor arm that just won't work out in the tight space I have so will be sticking it up on Adverts. It's an Ergotron LX - a nice bit of kit so a shame I have to stick with the stand that came with it.

I'll also be selling my Crossover 34U100 34" 3440x1440 Ultra-Wide Monitor (review here). One of the physical menu buttons is sellotaped on so it will be a bargain. Perfect otherwise and a great toe in the water if you fancy trying out an ultrawide.

Just make sure there is enough air circulation m8, there are built in fan(s) so if no clean air it might get very hot in that tight space.....looks well all the same. You have great taste what did I start, 3 peeps have bought these since I posted lol.

Cheers, yeah was a bit concerned about temps myself so I moved everything else out from behind the monitor so plenty of space for air to circulate. It was previously a rats nest of gadgets, power-bricks and wires that generated heat of its own. Now it's all clear and cool.

Also finally routed all my cables properly under and through the desk. Should have done it years ago! Thinking I might NEED to get a fancy wireless mechanical keyboard and wireless mouse now to keep the theme going...

That setup looks pretty sweet. I'll be watching adverts for your sale(s) as I've been looking to upgrade my home office setup, and two of the big options were ultra wide on a monitor arm (hence lurking on this thread), or 2x wide-screen on a dual arm. Being 6'3" my spine despises desk-level monitors at this point!

Is this Samsung G5 on Elara a decent monitor?

I want a 1440 144hz Ultrawide, and I am struggling for choice. Would rather not pay much more than 600e if possible. But slightly lost.

I think someone recommended this one earlier in the thread how is it for compiarson - https://www.komplett.ie/iiyama-g-master-gb3461wqsu-b1-34/20994562/product/9511

If you are going to be doing some gaming I'd recommend the Samsung monitor, non curved tend to only really be suitable for just general day to day computer work. Or at least that is what I have read. Personally I'd choose the Samsung.

Plenty of top dedicated gaming monitors are non curved.

G5 isn't highly rated & you can get a G7 for the same price: https://www.komplett.ie/samsung-odyssey-c27g75tqsu-27/21003195/product/9511
The G5 touts being "HDR10" but with only 250nits peak brightness that's completely useless.

    The Iiyama isn't a bad buy though, here's Kitguru's take: https://www.kitguru.net/peripherals/james-morris/iiyama-g-master-gb3461wqsu-b1-34in-144hz-gaming-monitor-review/

That G7 isn't UW though right (and is a good bit smaller)?

I have been gaming on Ultrawide for a while, and I really like it.

The G7 is not UW, but it is a better panel by far than on the G5.

Thanks for the advice! But I am keen on the UW.

It appears that G5 is a new model, and that it is not the same panel as on the normal aspect ratio G5. So there doesn't seem to be many reviews.

It's still gonna be a Samsung-made VA panel as per DisplayNinja: https://www.displayninja.com/new-monitors/

With a brightness of 250 cd/m² (nits) I expect the same performance as the non-UW models.

Got the Dell 34 UW today. Man its good. Was a bit worried about the blacks but honest they are pretty good. Really is a nice bit of kit. Dell will match PC worlds price of 1100 also.

I was considering the AW2721D but after watching the hardware unboxed review im leaning towards the Samsung G7 as ill only be using it for gaming.
Still not sure if its a big enough upgrade on my current Dell S2716DG as i wont be hitting 240hz @1440P anytime soon plus im more than happy once im sustaining 90+ fps/hz, maybe there will be a big improvement on image quality?

I have the 32" G7 coming from a AOC Agon 27" IPS panel and it's an upgrade for me. I wouldn't have stayed at 27" as would have seen that as a side step. Have no complaints with the purchase but i did get it for €500 on Black Friday so the price was right for me.
