No, it's a unique situation this year - because Leinster is being expanded to six teams in 2021, this is the one time where Kerry will be automatically promoted if they win the Joe McDonagh.

Are you saying Kerry will be promoted to Leinster if they win the final?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,806 ✭✭✭An Ciarraioch

Yes, just for this year, because there is no bottom team in Munster due to the temporary scrapping of the round-robin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 981 ✭✭✭conor05

Yeah would be nice to see a few of them get up and compete but no point coming up a getting battered. The 3 teams that came up, carlow, Westmeath and Laois all appear to be gone backwards. They really need to get their house in order underage and compete against the big boys.

    Laois gone backward?

They lost to Clare by a point and then Clare bet Wexford by 7pts the week after.

    Laois are a good side.

Well they beat Dublin last year and were well bet this year by them, don't seem to be at the level they were at last year.

I dont think Laois have gone backwards but Clare and Wexford were both pretty crap this year

before the temp knockout championship was introduced the round robin system meant that if Antrim (or any Leinster team) won the JM they would go into the Leinster round robin for 2021 but If Kerry win they have to go through a playoff with the 5th place Munster team for a place in the 2021 Munster round robin and if they lose its back into the JM for 2021

Well they beat Dublin last year and were well bet this year by them, don't seem to be at the level they were at last year.

Laois were unfortunate with injuries this year and certainly didn't perform against a Dublin team hell bent on exacting revenge for the loss last July 2019.

Laois brought their game to Nolan Park V Clare and could have won that.

Out of the three teams you've listed, Laois have probably lived in the top tier better than Carlow's and Westmeath's recent experiences.

It is likely that Eddie Brennan will be kept as manager for 2021 and following a recent damning interview (albeit "off-the-record") where he cut some in the county board to shreds, the county board will have no choice but to better fund Eddie's team in the season ahead.

If Laois can continue with Eddie Brennan who has unearthed some good talent in the county and brought them to this level, there is every possibility that we can better challenge tier one teams in the coming season.

It will be interesting to see how we approach the coming NFL.

Will be interesting to see how Laois get on with a proper round robin season next year but I'd still like to see Laois, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath and Carlow show a big improvement under age consistently.

Well done to kildare for their CR victory. Caught the 2nd half. Enjoyable game I must say.

It’s funny after watching both the NR and CR finals today the difference in speed of hurling, striking and even the physiques of the players.

I am sure the JMD final will be another higher standard again in 3 weeks between Kerry and Antrim.

    Two entertaining matches today.

As far as I can make out, the format for next year's championship is that the Liam McCarthy will have 11 teams and that each of the four lower tiers will have 6 teams as follows:

Joe Mcdonagh: Meath, Westmeath, Carlow, Kildare, Down, plus the losers of Antrim/ Kerry.

Christy Ring: Derry, Wicklow, Offaly, London, Sligo, Roscommon.

Nicky Rackard: Donegal, Mayo, Tyrone, Armagh, Leitrim, Warwickshire.

Lory Meagher: Monaghan, Louth, Longford, Fermanagh, Cavan, Lancashire.

Might be a better format if correct, each team guaranteed 5 matches.

It is such a strange year to see Kerry playing in Croke Park on All Ireland hurling final day .This is as good as it has gotten for Kerry hurling since 1891!!!

Are Donegal not promoted now to CR for 2021 after winning NR?

As far as I know, there is no promotion from Nicky Rackard or Lory Meagher this year.

Hopefully they will settle on a format now and avoid having teams winning competitions but not getting promoted.

The day they stop messing about lower tier hurling teams is the day the GAA ceases to exist.

Especially with their footballers knocked out early and now sitting at home looking on!

Great win for Kildare, some quality young hurlers involved, hopefully hold their own next year in the Joe Mc. Surprised they haven't tried to get the 2 kenny's back up from Tipp.

    Donegal have been promoted.

Confirmed placings so far. The round 2B losers in NR were relegated. Can't find any info on CR relegation.

JMcD: Carlow, Antrim/Kerry, Meath, Kildare, Down, Westmeath (6)

CR: Offaly, Donegal, Roscommon, Sligo, Derry, Wicklow, London (7)

NR: Armagh, Mayo, Leitrim, Tyrone, Warwickshire, Fermanagh/Louth (6)

LM: Lancashire, Longford, Monaghan, Fermanagh/Louth, Cavan (5)

The British teams may not be able to compete so Christy Ring will only have 6 teams if you take out London.

    Longford have definitely been relegated.

Watching a bit here of the Lory Meagher final. Using white sliotars. Amazing now how hard they are to see on tv having got used to the yellow over past few weeks

Gleeson doing some job with Antrim.

Hopefully he stays. I see he is one of those linked with the Laois job. Antrim need a bit of continuity. Good to see the Belfast clubs contributing to the panel too.

Looking forward to this today, should be a good game hopefully the weather improves for it. Would have to give Antrim the edge here they've been flying it this year serious achievement given they just came up from the Christy Ring.

Antrim have been in the Joe McDonagh since it started in 2018.

Might be mixing up that they were down in 2A in the NHL. Looking forward to this as much as the big one today.

    That's it!

Because the championships are run on leagues with a final and the leagues are run on leagues with a final I’m always doing the same. In one of them both teams are playing the likes of Carlow and Westmeath, and in the other it’s Wicklow and Mayo. It’s all an odd setup really.

Really looking forward to this, will be interesting to see how we set up to combat Antrim's goal threat, the last day they ran at us from the start and we were flattered by the half time score, even though Shane Conway missed a penalty Antrim were far better then us in that first half.

Antrim will be confident but if we can put a seed a doubt in their heads early on then it will interesting to see how they react

Its a massive day for everyone who is involved in Kerry hurling, an impossible task at times to promote the game in the county, the butt of many of jokes throughout the years by a lot of people both within and outside the county,

I hope today that our lads do themselves justice, play without fear and get the performance that their hard work deserves.

much needed goal for Kerry gets them back into the game, 1-2 to 0-6 after 20 min

ooh, close one for Kerry. great save from the keeper.

There wasn't even a lick of paint in whether that crossed the line or not. Tough one for the umpires to decide. On another angle, it looked just over possibly.

Was full sure it was in from the main angle and I thought he looked to be reaching for the green flag, but he was dead right to change his mind.

Keeper did really well there to get back.

I thought in on first look and replay but real 50/50 so it is what it is.

Funny watching Donal Og saying goal. No better man for screaming at an umpire if that call went against him

Is it just me or is this a desperately poor game of hurling?

Not having a go at the competition, I have seen these teams play a good few times an awful lot better than this.

Not just you, it's been woeful so far. No lack of effort but real lack of quality.

Ya, good 10 minutes there from Antrim and some lovely scores.
Game might liven up a bit now as Kerry are going to have to attack the game to get back into it.

Cheers. Was wondering if I was getting cantankerous in my old age as I was giving out about the camogie last night as well.

Ger Canning is talking about the intensity of the game, but to me that can often mean that its just poor hurling, bad touches, bad passes resulting in lots of rucks which looks like intensity, but is really just a symptom of a poor game.

Think the occasion has got to Kerry again, they're normally better than this.

Antrim are beginning to show us what they can do!

All Antrim now but crazier things have happened and you never know after the water break

Kerry just don't have the hurlers unfortunately.

Really wish the GAA had put more effort into the actual trophies for the hurling divisions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,570 ✭✭✭The White Feather

I am enjoying this match though. Two teams going at it with errors but thats what its about. Making these mistakes and learning from them. Not top quality but that is expected.

Maybe a bit more mistakes than you would want but its good to see other teams televised and getting recognition.

Shane Conway is very light for this level.
