Stage 21: Cernusco sul Naviglio – Milano 15.7 km ITT

    Sunday, October 25th, 13:20 CEST

    ALT_1280X852_TAPPA-21.jpg?v=20200922144431
    PLAN_852x852_2020_TAPPA-21.jpg?v=20200922144423

    Technical Overview:

The last stage is again a short ITT, but unlike last year’s this one is pan flat, on long straights that will hugely favour specialists and cause some significant gaps. There is not much to talk about the route here. The stage starts in the outskirts of Milan and the only checkpoint will be at km 10.3, two thirds of the way and already in the city, which is a bit weird. The finish will be in front of the famous Duomo.

    ARRIVI_1280X852_TAPPA-21.jpg?v=20200922144434

    What to expect:

Jai v Tao, nothing to split the pair to date. Wilco Kelderman is too far back to make it up in the short ITT. Tao is the better TTer looking at historic comparisons, but neither cyclist has ever done a TT with a Grand Tour on the line. The bookies have Tao as a big favourite, surprisingly big, no value to be had betting on him!

    Duomo di Milano

    Betting

    Tao Geoghegan Hart - 1/6
    Jai Hindley - 4/1
    Wilco Kelderman - 100/1

I have rarely got to watch the Giro due to school back in the day and work etc but I have loved this outing. It didn't have many of the big names but the ones that did show up and the next generation gave us a great outing. And of course the scenery. Loved it.

You can't ask for more on a last day.

Will Bradley Wiggins propose to Tao Geoghegan Hart at the finish line?

I recently moaned that this year's Giro was kind of boring. Boy was I wrong.

I follow some one Twitter that lives locally. Says the roads are in poor condition with lots of potholes. Might be a factor

I don't know if it's the size of Ganna or that he's really so much faster than everyone else but he looks like he's absolutely horsing along.

    edit...WOW!

It's like Liberace took up cycling.

Ganna is my favourite non-Irish rider at the moment. I love to see a tall, ''heavy'' (by cycling standards) rider absolutely smashing it. What a beast.

I concur, seems a very likeable chap too!

marginal gains, do you remove your front derailleur to save aerowatts? A thread on twitter yesterday was suggesting that all other things being equal, 1 aero watt could win it. That's taping over holes,, removing a water bottle holder, placement of the GPS transponder. Also talked about rolling resistance and suggested 2-3 psi could swing it.
I noticed Ganna's gps transponder was on the downtube where the bottle would normally be, and looking at Jai's p5. it looks to be behind the saddle. Wonder could it come down to something as small as that.

Given the stuff around him over the last couple of years, Dennis really seems happy in that team. Very relaxed interview there after the TT.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,762 ✭✭✭✭Inquitus

Just over 10 mins til Jai hits the road, Tao heads off 3 mins before him!

Tao 10 seconds up according to Eurosport at the halfway mark!

    Edit: 13 seconds

TGH looks a bit more comfortable than JH. A bit less rocking and rolling.

22 seconds up on Jai at the only checkpoint, looking good soo far for Tao!

Tao Geoghegan Hart wins the 2020 Giro D'Italia, who would have picked that one eh? Congrats to him, well deserved!

How many GC winners / contenders will they have next year? I take no enjoyment in success for Dave Brailsford though.

Great win by Irish- Scots rider Tao Geoghegan Hart.

    Another win for rim brakes!

Why anyone would want disc brakes on a TT bike is beyond me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,033 ✭✭✭✭Richard Hillman

Fair play to them. Not just the actual time before the stage but there was nothing between them on the climbs. TGH was better in the TT and that was the difference. Greatly contested tour. It shows you don't need the A-Listers to make a very entertaining 3 week tour

Well done to TGH. We'll see what sort of reaction he gets in the British media to his victory — Adam Yates was overlooked when he won a few years ago.

How does he fit in with the team for next year? Bernal. Thomas, Carapaz, Sivakov and potentially Dennis if he puts his mind to it. Not to mention Porte, Martinez and Adam Yates who've signed for next year! A big bump in his contract for sure if he stays.

Tao Geoghegan Hart, the first patron saint to win the Giro D'Italia, according to Eurosport UK.

But in all seriousness, fair play to him.

Interesting interview by Brailsford... now that they are Ineos they are reinventing themselves to go for exciting wins rather than winning by parking the bus.

Like almost everyone here I didn't like the way they won in the Froome years but have had no problem with them this Giro. Some great stages

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,839 ✭✭✭✭dahat

Brailsford admitted that Sky/Ineos found a way to win in the Froome years and became stationary allowing other teams to move past them. The crashes for Froome & GT have directly changed the path of the outfit & for the better.

Gonna be tough for Eddie to get a look in next year, with the people signed and the likes of TGH, Dennis, Ganna taking themselves to the next level.
Its a pity that he was ruled out of this giro, who ended up subbing in for him on the Ineos team?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,569 ✭✭✭harringtonp

Completely accidental too. From the interviews (TGH, Ganna) you get the impression the team really enjoyed themselves this Giro. In Brailsford words after Thomas went home, getting in the break was open to all and whoever didn't make it would help out TGH.

    Ganna completely monstered everyone:

Hope he enjoys this and doesn’t mind being ignored by UK mainstream sports media.
Everton’s loss to Southampton and Coutinho’s hamstring injury are currently ranking above his Giro win on BBC sport

You think that's ignorance? Jai Hindley (from Perth)doesn't even get a mention on the main sports page of the West Australia online newspaper! Hamilton's new F1 record is reported so the overnight shift is not an excuse. I didn't realise cycling is so poorly reported in Australia. A quick glance at the Sydney Morning Herald suggests the same lack of interest.

I also loved it tbh. Think people on here massively overplay the commentary - every second comment on a stage thread is about the commentators. Learn to live with it or turn the volume down. And this is the Ineos Grenadiers

    +1

These guys are operating remotely and did a great job for me. Hatch does a job good and I'm sure the riders actually appreciate the correct pronunciation of names for once.

Amazed to hear from Rob Hatch that this is the first year ever in the Giro that Italy hasn't someone in the top 5. That's fair going.

Signing Carapaz was a sure sign of that, I dont see him riding in a boring train like Froome etc, the lad just loves to attack!
