Great to be back. I reckon I'll feel it in the morning though.

Bench press went quite well, fairly close to what I was doing.

Tried some light dead lifts, and at the bottom of one of the reps something..... went. Struggling to walk now.

FFS! Ah well. Can still bench press!

I'm already feeling it, and it feels goooooooood.
    It's good to be back.

I'm going to take my time with it and really focus on TuT and proper warm ups and stretching after.

Going to be my best yet!

Just out of the gym, I seem to be around 80% of what I was lifting before the lockdown, the dumbbells and resistance bands I was using the last 6 months seemed to have helped keep most of my strength, so happy enough after my first workout

Frustrating workout this morning in my gym, its poorly equipped. Arrived to find no free benches, no free dumbells in the weight range I needed. Lost a good 20 mins time.

    It could be worse.

At least you didn't do a 40km round trip at 4:30am to find a notice stuck to the gym door saying they were closed for the day due to the door being faulty.

I was livid. No email, no text, not even a FB post.... you had to actually get to the gym to find out it was closed

All the muscles I trained yesterday are sore today, just being wise and working around the stiffness will allow me to train pretty much everyday. Back to the usual routine this morning, in there before seven, seeing lots of familiar faces, with knowing nods that we are back!

Back is rightly fooked this morning. took me 50mins to do a 30min walk with the dog. Had to skip the gym.... on the second day back, cause I can hardly walk.

A very frustrating end to the gym closures for me!

I read your initial comment n this and knew it would be bad the next day, have done similar to this a couple of times.... At one stage I couldn't bend to put my shoes on. It fades after about three or four days

Just did pull ups and dips yesterday and dipped my toe on bench press....... did reps of 80% of my Dec one rep max so happy enough. Was back in 2019 I pressed anymore than the December weight.

Heading back today for pull ups and chin ups and whatever else appeals / is available.

    Ouch... I've been there.

Sometimes people write off a low back event like this as 'just a tweak', and assume that it will resolve in a couple of days. If you were lucky and it was purely muscular that might be the case, but as you're probably aware there's also a chance this is disc related and might need a bit more thought.

Yep same here. Started with back and biceps yesterday, didn't do mad weight at all, high rep stuff and one exercise to failure on back and same on biceps but my god I'm sore today. Luckily I should be ok do do a similar chest and shoulders tonight. Horse those protein shakes into ya.

I'm skipping the gym today because my quads and arse are busted after yesterday's squatting with 25kg incl the bar :D and they say "cycling and running will keep you fit", yeah...

Back in WW today, busy enough but got a bench. The place is like a sauna however, soaked with sweat.

    was at flyefit this morning
Was as strong as before but felt ok . all working sets to failure.
restarted what i started in nov last.

i'm glad to get a workout in but set up is frustrating.
I know it's not the staffs fault in how the place is set up - all machines spaced means there is no functioning track anymore.

but not having the water fonts working is criminal

best of luck with the recovery, I tweaked my back at the bottom of a squat about a month ago (poor form, leant forward and ended up doing a half bast@rd good morning). Only just feeling properly right now, but going to take a good deload and record myself from now on so that I can see when the form is breaking down.

This afternoon will be my second session (Chest Shoulders and Triceps baby).

These couple of weeks will be foundational; just about seeing what's just at the edge of my comfort zone.

I did high-reps deadlifts (and back exercises across the board) yesterday at a very low weight. I feel a little stiff but not close to full Dom's.

Just going to continue to ease in and enjoy the process.

First proper leg session this morning since Christmas. Probably won't be able to get out of bed tomorrow morning.

I was making good progress in the gym before the lockdown, particularly with the chest press using a bar.

At home, I only have dumbbells and I quickly learned that pressing the same weight with dumbbells was more difficult, so I had to drop the weight a bit.

Since the start of the lockdown in January, I've added 6.5kg (to each dumbbell, so i guess 13kg in total). This might be a paltry improvement to some, I'm not entirely sure what's good progress and what isn't, I'm happy enough with any bit of progress with it anyway!

I can wait and see when I go back tomorrow, but in theory should I expect to be able to bench more with the barbell now than I was able to when I was last at the gym? Or have I neglected some muscle/movement by only doing dumbbell presses?

You should see some increase in your bench but DB bench is an infinitely better exercise so I wouldn't bother too much with BB bench either way! Good luck with it.

Went for the first time today but just arms and chest. I'm dreading doing squats this week after 6 months, I could barely walk when they opened again last year, it was way worse than I could have imagined.
Hope it's not as bad as you fear!

I did legs yesterday morning - I won't lie, it was bad today painwise but not unbearable.
It was maybe somewhat limiting in that my strength has gone down so much, and I was just so shaky in terms of movement pattern that I wasn't able to go OTT with the weight even if I wanted to which probably helped a bit.

My main mistake on Monday was doing loads of ancillary stuff, so even though I didnt do anything heavy, Im still trying to figure which parts hurt the least for today.

for people who have been back, how are flyefit doing their time slots? The welcome back mail said that you don’t have to leave after the 75 minutes?

Could you arrive anytime in the slot and just continue to work until you’re done?

Seems like you only are allowed in at your time, but then they are not kicking you out after the 75 mins as previously, have only been there first thing in the morning tho so not 100% sure on this but it seems to be how its working

I've been about 10ish minutes late for my slot but there was no issue getting in. If you're more than 15 minutes late, maybe you can't get in, but I'm not sure.

You can stay as long as you want. I was there 2 hours yesterday.

They didn't seem to be kicking anyone out on Monday anyway. Most were gone before the 90 mins was up anyway so a bit of spillover is going to be fine

I'd say I'll be trouble tomorrow and Friday. Got a bit carried away on my first day back this morning, probably pushed myself too much with an intense leg day.

IMO, DOMS are always worst 2 days later. I'm on "1 Day Later" soreness and stiffness already and it's still only Day 0. Friday is going to be baaaaad.... :o

I am aching. I took it easy enough weight wise. Legs tomorrow and then ill rest untill Monday. Had a run this evening though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,518 ✭✭✭matrim

Thanks for the answers. My workout is typically about 50 minutes so want to see if I could turn up 20 / 30 minutes late to avoid the first rush. And if I then happen to go over, it looks like I would be able to finish.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,639 ✭✭✭completedit

Haven't really noticed any loss in strength but I wasn't strong to begin with.

  • Registered Users Posts: 906 ✭✭✭FlubberJones

All major body parts now trained over the last four days and safe to say everything is sore... but not critically, so I'm able to work around the DOMS quite well. Loading up on creatine last week and increasing the protein "seems" to of helped but I would only know if I had some reference point, in my opinion its not as bad as I thought it would of been.
Great to be back in there and knowing all it will take is some hard work and a decent diet and it'll be back to normal.

Any guess/ insight as to when showers likely to open in FF? Bit of a farce given pools now allowed to open. If numbers are controlled (as they currently are) then surely the risks are low enough to justify opening them. Absolutely zero use for my membership until they do open as I've no showers in work and no FF near home.

Looks like my local gym (and another one of the bigger gym/pool chains, according to their email newsletter) aren't allowing use of changing rooms/showers for gym goers.

They were allowed last year with no vaccines; there is currently no strain whatsoever on the health system, very low figures in hospital.

Policies are more cautious despite being in a better situation.

no one if forcing them, looks like a cash grab , they will have to change in the winter and/or subscriptions come up for renewals

I went on monday and did a slow run but was pleased to see I could still do 5km. Did a few weight machines for things i found it hard to do at home (lats, butterfly etc) with light weight and felt fine.

Went back on Tuesday and did my deadlift and squat and, even though ive been doing dumbell versions at home and used light enough weights, have been feeling it in my legs all week.

Hope to get back in today, after 2 days off, but if not will definitely get in tomorrow

it'll be a big factor when the work from home starts to end.
not being able to shower before heading off to work or somewhere else (like pub/restaurant) after will be a big factor in renewals.
