I started a new game over the weekend and as soon as I loaded the DVD the PS4 started downloading updates for the game.

Do these patches/game updates, work in conjunction with the game running off the DVD?

When you play a game on a PS4 for the first time you'll see that it "installs" some data on the PS4 itself. This is normally done for a few reasons such as making things load faster and helping with certain features. One of those features is to allow the developers to release fixes for issues in the games known as "patches". These will generally release on an ad-hoc basis for most games, but the frequency is different across the games.

It will basically modify some of the data installed on your PS4 to fix issues in the game (things not working correctly, adding new features, improving performance etc) and generally the game will ask you to wait for the patch to install before entering the game again (this is again not guaranteed but anything with online multiplayer is pretty strict on this). So it will add a little bit of data to your PS4 and it will work in conjuction with the disk, which is often just used to "prove" you own the game and then the rest of the data is kept on the PS4 itself (hence a game on a disk still taking up lots of space on your hardrive)

    Hope this helps a bit!
