The wife is getting an iphone for the first time in years and it got us to thinking about how to use it in the car as hers doesn't have a Carplay head unit. Up to now she would use the handset Android Auto interface but iOS doesn't have similar for Carplay.
What to people do normally? Just use Google Maps/Waze/etc or are there any good third party "car mode" apps that can be bought?

If the car has android auto they usually have CarPlay as well. What car is it?

It has neither. On Android there’s a phone version of what you’d see on an Android Auto head unit so you can use the phone screen for it. There’s no handset version of carplay.

What does she actually want to do on the phone in the car?

The same as someone would use Carplay for in a car.

The phone version of Android Auto is the same as the head unit interface - Navigation, Phone, Media, big text, easy to see, etc.

There's an app called CarOS (https://carosapp.com/) that gives you a "carplay like" interface, but some of the features require a subscription. There might be others too.

That looks to fit the bill exactly, thanks.
