In the words of Barbara from the Royle Family I don’t care if he’s gay, straight or Australian.. but Phil’s story has all the hallmarks of someone who was pressured into coming out because a bigger story on them was about to leak. Usually when you see a celeb doing an exclusive deal with the muck that is The Sun, you can be damned sure it’s an exchange in order to keep something worse from coming out. The fact that he is still married and has no intention of separating suggests his wife knew all along and if rumours are to be believed he being gay was an open secret on This Morning. I was actually shocked about how little sympathy there was for the poor wife. He had kept that relationship going and then years later to come out, it must have been absolutely devastating and hugely embarrassing for her. The whole marriage that she had built her life on had been a lie.

But once Philip crossed the line to gayness, his being gay trumps her being female so all the media were on her side. Identity seems to trump actions every time.
