Can anyone summarise what happened? The articles are quite long and I won’t be able to read them until later tonight but am interested in what is being reported!

Leo gave confidential information to a mate which he shouldn't have. He's now in a bit of bother plus there is a possibility more information will be released.
His position is untenable as the lad can't be trusted with sensitive information.

John Taylor must be some age, nearly 50 years since OIRA tried to take him out. Doesn't look like a guy who epitomises healthy living either...

    Does anybody remember this?

Dominic Raab accuses Leo Varadkar of leaking private Brexit conversation - Jan 2019.

I guess Dominic Raab was correct and Varadkar's reputation in lieu of this latest scandal, is in tatters.

Yes the NAGP had an office on Kildare Street, Leo could have even popped it into the letter box himself:D

There's also email but that leaves a trail. Presumably he gave away a photocopy not his sole copy so scanned and e-mailing shouldn't have been any more difficult than posting it.

Bloody hell, if Raab can figure out that Varadkar is leaking then Varadkar must be pretty sh1te at this leaking business.

Wonder how Martin will handle this, he got rid of a minister over a bite to eat. Leo has shown he can't be trusted with confidential information slightly more serious than an errant prawn cocktail and a bit of steak.

I heard on RTE this morning he hasn’t the authority to get rid of him even if he wanted to. Party expulsion is the only option, which is unlikely apparently. They didn’t go into detail. Anyone know the nuts and bolts of this due to the ridiculous Taoiseach sharing role?

From the Business Post article the NAGPs head office is a garage at the side of a mansion in Kilkenny owned by a woman who seems to have a relationship with a Director who spent fees at casinos and nightclubs. She was on 100,000 salary plus 7,000 p/m was paid renting the garage. The director withdrew 100,000s before its collapse.

O'Tuathail was president throughout these arrangements I believe.

    I haven’t been following today’s news but what’s happened?

Basically Leo gave a finalised GP agreement to a body representing 40% of the countries GPs. People and government opposition are trying to make the next Watergate out of it, and are growing annoyed that there it isn't the number 1 news item on RTE. Some on the interwebs are even exclaiming that he should be raided by the guards.

In reality he will answer a few questions in the Dail next week and that will be that.

    This is potentially damning.
O Tuathail approached Varadkar for the Docs as a favour for a friend.

I'm not sure if the friend was Bowes but O Tuathail did ask Bowes would Vanguard consider getting involved in Direct Provision because of the Loot .

A reminder that O Tuathail treats patients in Direct Provision for Safety Net Primary Care.

Martin can ask Leo to resign as a minister. Mickey D can sack (if asked by Martin) Leo as a minister if he refuses to resign if asked. Could he still serve as Taniste, I have no idea.

In theory MM can do the above, in practise he can't. He's reign as Taoiseach will be over if he sacks him.

It's not that it's not the number one issue, it's that RTE news bulletins aren't covering it.

You mean FG would pull down the government in the middle of a pandemic because their man misbehaved. Yeah I could see that increasing support for FG. lol.

The negotiations were over. Ergo not sensitive.

So why didn't he just email the document from the Department? Why all the secrecy from Leo and from the folks who received the document?

Paschal Donohoe being sent out to defend Varadkar today demonstrates how damaging this is for him. Things are ominous for Varadkar. The lack of public support for him today by some significant players in both Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is notable. However the Green Party are the real weakness here for the Government. Labour, Social Democrats and smaller parties are going to put them under serious pressure. Varadkar could be gone as Tánaiste by the end of the week.

It wasn't finalised, he wrote "subject to amendments/change" across the top.

That would be on MM. Do you really think it would survive if he tried to sack LV.

That depends on whether Lleo's remarkably quiet colleagues in GF are prepared to support him.

I don't believe we know when that was written on it, how do you know it wasnt written on that hard copy while the discussions were still ongoing with the IMO? The IMO certainly believed it to be finalised, based on their 5 April statement.

It will take a fine gael heave against Leo, won't happen unless he becomes a liability. If it gets to the point where it could collapse the government all bets are off.

This leak won't do it but you never know what other leaks could come out and do it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,653 ✭✭✭✭Plumbthedepths

I have no idea why you think Martin would be in danger for sacking Leo.
FG pulls the plug on behalf of Leo , that won't go down well with Joe Public. No amount of spin would assuage the damage FG would suffer.

So he (possibly) gave a friend a contract document of a deal that was already done?

Well if he sits back and says nothing he's going to look incredibly weak too, don't forget, FF has lost two agri ministers already, so some will want to "even the score" so to speak.

As an aside - I'm now convinced Leo wasn't lying when he went on his attack of NPHET on the CB show.

In hindsight it looks like Leo didn't know (whereas others did) and appears he could've possibly been intentionally left out of the loop by the others - because it's been proven he's prone to leaking information.
