    And then there were two...

    tenor.gif

Two sites atop majestic locations. One situated in Southern Peru and one in the Alpine state of Salzburg. You may only choose one as your Ultimate World Landmark. You have 60 minutes to make your decision. Votes are to be made via PM only with the winner announced at 11PM. You may discuss your choice, campaign for or against a candidate or even disclose your vote but only those recieved via PM will be counted. Let's make this reveal worth waiting for. All votes will be made transparent after the fact! With that said, here are your finalists.

2 very different options in the final - though both of them mountain related.
    classic vs modern.
Vote send in but I think either of them have something that would make them a worthy winner.

Before I announce the winner, I want to give a sincere gratitude to everyone who sent a kind message along with their votes, honestly very lovely to read some of them! This has been a great trip around the world and I've loved going with all of you. We'll get to some of these places in the near future hopefully.

With that said, I can reveal that with a margin of 53% (and only one single vote in the difference ) your winner of the Ultimate World Land Mark Tournament is.....

If you don't place a vote right now for some random Liechtenstein qualifying round from 11 days ago I'll be disappointed!

    very happy with the winner.
It's in my list and 2 of my best friends were there last season and they speak very highly of the whole area.

Mack, thank you once again for organising this. I wasn't able to vote as much as I would have liked, but I followed the action because your competitions are always top notch!! :)

    Worthy Winner.

I only showed up once all the hard work was done, but I assume it was as great a tournament as it always is with yourself Mack, so fair play.

It wasn't my choice to win but nevermind. That last picture of Machu Picchu is even better than the original used too!

Just thinking, Schafberg reminds me of the Pixar movie 'Up', where the house floats away using balloons & ends up in 'Paradise Falls' on the edge of a cliff.
Thats exactly what that little pub looks like up there on the edge of that peak :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

    Some stats.

Round 3 had a 50-50 divide between Europe and Rest of the World. So did the 1/4 final. So did the semi final. So did the final. For a competition that had 6 continents represented and used a random number generator, that’s pretty remarkable.

HeidiHeidi, Sinead Spears, sawduck, Purgative, Cosmo Kramer, bubblypop, cdeb and Necro all made it to the 100 Club with a century of posts each.

The final was level at 8-8 and the possibility of overtime or a tie breaker or god knows what loomed. sawduck stepped in and cast the decisive vote. So blame him peak fans.

There were two “votes” on thread in favour of Schafberg Peak. However, the posters never submitted anything via PM. Basically, it was there for the Austrian landmark!

Ironically, Paradise Falls is in South America in the movie.

I genuinely was surprised by that win. I really thought Schafberg had it in the bag. Just that extra little something :)

I can be biased now I suppose as it’s all over. I think Machu Picchu winning is the right call. It’s definitely a well known landmark and has a very rich history. I think there’s something almost mystical about the Peruvian entry. Don’t get me wrong, I think the peak is absolutely stunning but it’s more of an uncovered gem... which we have exposed to a lot of folks.I reckon our little contest here is going to drive some tourists over to check out Schafberg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,158 ✭✭✭✭HeidiHeidi

Yeah, despite having voted for the peak, I can't argue with Machu Picchu winning, really.

World famous, and on a lot, if not most, bucket lists.

(I still think the Skelligs deserve their place at the table though :D)

I haven't forgotten the list of nominations, I'll get to work on that in the next day or two.

    Here’s how the votes fell;

Schafberg Peak took a 4-0 lead via

    Cosmo Kramer
    ChannelNo5
    JohnGreenFan
    Purgative

Machu Picchu pegged it back to 4-3 via

    cdeb
    mustang shelly
    bubblypop

Schafberg Peak then extended the lead to 6-3 via

    What.Now
    HeidiHeidi

Machu Picchu then levelled it up 6-6 via

    Irish Aris
    Citizenpain
    JP Liz V1

Schafberg Peak jumped ahead 7-6 via

    SineadSpears

Machu Picchu momentarily drew level 7-7 via

    duffman13

Schafberg Peak again led 8-7 via

    Also Starring LeVar Burton

Machu Picchu brought it to a stalemate at 8-8 via

    Kolido

And then sawduck cast the decisive vote for the winner Machu Picchu.

Machu Picchu never actually led at all throughout the whole final until the death!

Cartoon Wars 3 : The Classic (Looney Tunes, Hannah Barbera, etc)

The sports grounds sounds an obvious place to go.

I know many won't be interested of course. But for the others it'd give a nice mix of hi-tech stadia (Krasnodar), traditional grounds (Fulham) and scenic but tiny grounds (Henningsvaer).

Sounds an interesting mix provided the usual Premier League banter ****e can be kept off (and it didn't affect the club crest one I think)

I think you mean ''banter''. That wouldn't be allowed to infect it! I think there's some great scope for this. Especially if we...

Has Greatest Cartoon in general been done actually? Could be a shout. You'd fear the Simpsons would walk it but maybe not. It's a worthwhile project. I'll check the forum now.

Just checked and it seems the Best Cartoon ever hasn't been done within the confines of this forum so I reckon we've got a tournament in the making there. I'll add it to the list for definite.

Don't think it has been done, that'd be a good one.

Not sure The Simpsons would walk it having been on so long and slipping quality over time.

I don't see why not. These are partly about discovering new places, and expanding the range would help.

What about the original classics - chocolate, crisps, etc? Anything left from there? I think ice pops and biscuits were done too?

Also I still think there's scope for a rerun of this with current nominations excluded. At a later stage of course.

I've never even seen the Simpsons! I may possibly be the last person on the planet who hasn't.....

Cartoons or sports stadia hold no interest for me I'm afraid :o (well, sports stadia do in principle, but I don't know many)

Someone mentioned a natural landmark competition, I'd definitely be on for that - in about six months' time though! Similarly for the best city suggestion.

Great competition and well done on a huge feat once again

A fitting winner too and I feel the real final was Machu Picchu vs Giza
