Seminal writer on the middle east.

I met with him after a talk he did in UCD a few years back - very generous with his time and had time for every one of the hundreds who que’d up to shake his hand and speak with him.

The inside inscription on one of his books has stayed with me for years -

Pity the nation that has lost all hope and all pity.

    R.I.P.

Ah no, enjoyed when he was on the last word with Emo. Had hoped that he would appear on the stand more often

Fearless journalist who will be missed.

    Rest in peace

The great journalist Robert Fisk has passed away.

Highly recommend his seminal book The Great War for Civilisation.

    Condolences to his family.

He was a great man. His books are excellent. Incredibly saddened to hear he is gone.

Sad to hear this. A fantastic journalist. TGWFC as you said is a must read, as relevant now as it was on its initial release.

I mainly remember him from him being on Dunphy's Last Word radio program back around the late 90's. Always seemed to have informed opinions. Obviously he had many interesting articles in print too.

    Absolutely.

As has already been alluded to ,The Great war on civilisation, is a great read but reminds everyone on man's inhumanity to his fellow man.

Of course no mention on BBC News site as of 11.29pm. Good to see Rte posting an appreciation.

a fantastic journalist. I loved hearing him on the radio as a guest.

he often went against the establishment view as he knew what was really going on. Funny many of the same people championing him ignored or were critical of his opinions when they didn't suit.

    RIP.

Brave journalist - Always said it as he saw it.
Never bowed to Israeli pressure, like many others.

A man of immense integrity, irritates me how many on the same side of the political aisle as me , feel they must always side with Israel and harshly criticise the likes of fisk

    Groupthink is stupid

Last of the old school journalists. No copy/pasting, what passes for journalism now.

    RIP.

A damn shame not many of his kind left now. I remember fondly when he was on the Late Late Show years ago with a cheerleader for the Iraq War, he put the guy firmly in his place.

    Who was the cheerleader?

Probably Ian O'Doherty. I remember him being a noisy supporter of the Iraq war in his own clueless way. Probably because he fancied himself something of an Irish Christopher Hitchens - even thought all he had in common with him was a drinking problem and possessed none of Hitch's talents with the pen.

He seemed to have nonpartitson insight into middle East politics. Intellectual and a pleasure to listen to. RIP.
