Detailed genomic sequencing reveals how the virus spread to vulnerable populations in a university town.

SARS-CoV-2 sequencing reveals rapid transmission from college student clusters resulting in morbidity and deaths in vulnerable populations

Genomic sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 cases in La Crosse county, Wisconsin, during September 2020 showed how the return of college students to three institutions of higher education caused a rapid expansion of two viral substrains.

Although the majority of cases were among college-age individuals, they identified rapid transmission of the virus into more vulnerable populations. There were two independent transmission events into two skilled nursing facilities, resulting in two fatalities.

Thanks government you've given us two weeks after more than 2 months
You'd swear there wasn't a perfectly good reason for it the way you put it.

I think it was the same after the Spanish or Hong Kong flu, has been referenced before on one of the C19 threads.

It will be two months as NPHET will get the full six weeks

Any additional restrictions after that is up to the government

People will be sick of restrictions at that point so the government better thread carefully

    Jesus Christ

Everyone who has the mutated form has recovered, it doesn't seem to affect patients any differently. But the issue is just that a vaccine may not work for it,but I don't think it's even confirmed whether or not current vaccines are effective for it, for now it's just a potential issue

Woman catches covid twice. Back in March and she was left with long covid and again recently. Second time left her in hospital.

Minister Donnelly confirming on RTE news the government going with Level 3 as the holding level for virus containment, as previously explained, with some short term loosening for the Christmas period. Credit where it is due here, and the courage to embark on the correct strategy being embraced by the government. It is not easy for non medical specialists to accept what is undoubtedly a difficult reality, yet trust the expert advice provided them, and take on the not to be underestimated difficulty of implementing and leading buy-in of this task.

    Geoff?

    Is that you

I wish Government and Nphet the best in trying to stop families getting together at Christmas.

I don't think it's a runner tbh, seems to be more Donnelly thinking out loud if anything

Should I turn myself in? The brother Geoff came to visit yesterday evening. To cut a long story short we ended up drinking some fine bottles of the finest Pinot Grigio from the lowlands of Veneto along with some truffles and canapés at a chums house in Wicklow. I had no essential reason to leave Dublin but did anyway. I was reluctant to go but before I knew it we found a rat run around a check point and I was well past Bray. Thought I saw Gok Wan in Dunnes there, but not sure, I haven’t been beyond my local Spar since March so everything is a bit exotic right now.

You definitely watch the blacklist, I read it with spaders voice in my head.

Realistically I think they'll try county wide travel restrictions December 1st to 13th

    Then allow travel 15th - 3rd January

They have to know people are going to travel anyway

    Not even a hello today?

Anyway, did he tell you to post that?

I can't understand why people post videos to Twitter/Facebook from their hospital bed.

I know if I was in hospital it's the last thing I'd be thinking of.

It strikes me as shameless attention seeking.

Maybe I'm in the minority, I don't know.

Who's in hospital and what are they posting? Sounds interesting. Might not be the right place to discuss.

Don’t we have a backlog of 200ish to see at some stage from yesterday?

Wonder when they will throw those in.

Donegal kerry and Laois have mink farms as of last year, but Ireland signed up to have them phased out. No idea of their status at the the moment. I presume dept of Agriculture testing them. We have run away minks as well. Cant say I blame them.

They are still there. Big places Don't be so sure about anyone testing them though

Some people have yet to learn that you don’t need validation from others to be happy in your own skin, that and they don’t understand the value of privacy. Leave them on, it’s their life and if making a show of themselves is their thing, leave them on!

Your little Braycation could cost thousands of lives. I hope the canapés were worth it.

More info on the mutation found from mink. Seems it's four different mutations in one strain. May potentially explain increased binding ability to bind ACE2 receptors. It's being confirmed currently in Denmark and should be shared by end of week.

Nothing confirmed. It's a serious precautionary measure to cull the 500m herd though.

It would be easy to do here. There are only 3 places with them and they were to be abolished soon anyway
