Yes because throwing addicts in jail and giving them a lifelong criminal record has proved itself to be a really good strategy.

You do realise that Joe Biden was instrumental in introducing the 1994 crime Bill that put so many of those people in jail to begin with?

    I totally agree.
But the only one who realistically could have lost would be Susan Collins...her vote share seems to likely be down massively and in fairness to her she has voted against the Republicans on some issues.

According to Josh Jordan on twitter "....Collins did not lead a single poll the entire cycle, and trailed by 5.5 in the RCP average in the final two months of the campaign."

Polling companies must be utterly ashamed today.

Good for you, arguing the merits of the soon to be former President's immense misogyny.

If its consensual between adults then play ball.

Good for you. Still upset about it

It's still illegal to supply them so very little will have changed for the police who don't want to waste time confiscating tiny amounts. Bit like Portugal I think.

Makes sense put like that, but it is definitely a bit mad looking at a glance. Fair play, just a bit of a surprise.

can understand weed but this seems mad!

Portugal have had similar laws since the year 2000 yet nobody ever talks about it, you know why? Because it has been an absolute success and proves the wars on drugs is a failure and not about drugs at all.

If there's one thing this thread has shown it's that snowflakes and easily offended folk don't only exist on the left.

What we're witnessing here with the split "closeness" of this vote.....is NOT the American people's judgements or affirmations regarding these topics. That is merely the narrative the hard left are positing in order to leverage the conscience of the electorate.

If the electorate truly believed that the Republican camp was genuinely an embodiment of all of the above "negatives" and was populated by "deplorables" as Clinton put it....then there's no way the voting would be this close, especially in connection with the Republican's application for a second term.

The moral, ethical shoddiness of the Republican voters is a manufactured, left-wing construct.

The evidence is there to see.....especially this hour.

If there was really any truth in the accusations being levied at Republican voters, they would have been "land-slided" out of existence this morning, courtesy of the intolerance of the US electorate for the "bad" characteristics they're accused of.

The truth of the matter is that millions of American voters quite simply "do not believe" that the left have been trying to leverage the US conscience from a position of sincerity, or that their judgements about "isms...phobias...and... ogynies" originates from a healthy, balanced mind-set, which allows for debate, nuance and circumstance.

The numbers today suggest that not enough of the left's "mud" has stuck in the mind of the US electorate....and also that political mud is basically what they've been slinging these last four years.

It's not enough to just give a political party "a bad name." There's got to be real substance in the accusations, and when enough people see the substance, the party is doomed and will crumble.

The Republican party is not quite as entrenched along deplorable lines as the left would have the electorate believe, and the numbers today are merely a testimony to this.

That's very wordy but a short response is that this election shows that sadly a huge proportion of the American electorate are 100% behind Trump, despite his complete lack of morals or human compassion.

The cult of individualism is rampant over there. It's also a damning indictment of the American education system.

He was the most unsuitable person to ever run for national office in 2016, but protest votes happen. Learning everything we have in the time since and sticking with him isn't a protest vote, it's who you are.

Decriminalisation of possession is viewed to be pretty effective, check out the likes of Portugal. It's being considered in Ireland. Also personal use is a small quantity, distributors would still be criminals. Although the likes of weed will likely just be legalised.

Pretty sure I saw the use of meth in parts of CA doubled once they started to just catch and release people. People getting locked up is part of the problem but if you increase use of meth and heroin the social problems are going to increase massively.

The particular good aspect of it is users have historically have contributed to a prison industrial complex. Going to prison makes them more likely to be serious offenders when they exit prison. It also generally ends up with the poor going to prison.
