Need to buy a new microwave as the old one is not heating
Whats the story with buying one from Argos and giving them the old one?
Do you have to let them know or just pop down with the old one when you buy the new one?

Not 100% sure but isn't there a large trolley off to the side that's for that.

Then why did you say this. "Do you have to let them know or just pop down with the old one when you buy the new one?" If you can't get down with the old one how will you pick up the new one?. If you are getting it delivered then just keep the receipt and drop the old one back in the future at some stage.

They are obliged to take it.You pay for it's disposal in the price of the new microwave. It applies to all retailers even Aldi and Lidl.

Argos is like 5 min walk away

Nearest recycle center is miles away

Problem solved, Argos have to take your old one back.
Retailers must take back your old electrical and electronic equipment in store for free on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. This means the old product must be of the same type or have the same purpose as the new item purchased.Jan 7, 2019

They certainly were still doing it until a while ago, but Covid probably put a stop to it for now.

Was scheduled for near me the week COVID hit. Obviously got pushed out to an undefined date now!

If you know someone living in a large apartment block they sometimes have WEEE cages for small items - up to the size of a microwave really - with their normal waste; it doesn't cost the management company anything to handle them so nothing wrong to put outside WEEE in. Funded by the recycling fund fees on larger items. Some workplaces have them also, same thing.

The 'like for like' rule definitely applies in the case of deliveries. For example, you can't ask the delivery guy to take away an old washing machine if he's delivering a microwave.

But for dropoff, if the retailer has signed up with WEEE Ireland, you don't have to have made any purchase so 'one for one' or 'like for like' will not apply. Both Power City and DID say on their websites that that you can drop off applicances at their stores (without making a purchase) and they will accept it.

Do I need to have made a purchase with DID Electrical to have my product recycled?

No. If you visit one of our stores, you can leave in your old appliance and we'll take care of the rest for you.

Customers may leave back old appliances to the store at any time. (No Purchase Necessary)

So it was no bother - just handed it to the cashier when paying for the new one
