The thing is developers want their games to sell as many copies as possible.
Although I'm sure they hope it sells, that isn't their main concern. It's marketing's job to sell as many copies. If you have "sell as much as possible" attitude on every level of development then you get the Avengers and free to play mobile fluff.

The good stuff happens when developers dont have to listen to the marketing men chasing after the latest fad and not realizing they missed the boat and the market is already saturated. Stuff like dark souls ran totally counter to the then trend of making games so accessible that they provided absolutely no challenge for fear of losing player engagement.

and then some are hired to make a game that will make the company they work for a lot of money, quality be damned.

If its actually done right an easy mode doesnt have to impact the quality of the game, obviously if you make a From game too easy it would ruin the game.

It might not affect the quality but it 100% affects the budget which in turns affects the entire development. Unless all you play is AAA blockbusters having difficulty selection can stretch out dev time on an indie or AA game in one where the creator never intended for it or the target audience has zero desire for it.

Spending time designing and implementing it can take away said time and money on other features that the target audience might actually want. People in here seem to think having/not having a difficulty selection is just an opinion that 'developers' (whom the majority have absolutely no decision making powers) have and all they need to do is check the 'difficulty' checkbox in the MakeGameLol.exe.

Nothing in software is easy or free. You're paying for that feature in one way or other whether you recognise it or not.
