Best receiver and speaker combo

Guys - I'm putting together a Christmas present for a guy whose current entire music setup looks to be an old Sony CMT-CPX1 mini system. 
I've €500 or so to spend and I'm not looking for separates and I know he has no vinyl.
On the basis that he'd need a CD player and I'd love to get him onboard with Spotify and similar, I'm looking at your Yamaha CRXN470D bundles.
I'm assuming that with either speaker combo this is going to be a step up sound-wise from what he has?
I'm also open to suggestion to alternatives to the Yamaha - once they have a CD player and wi-fi.

The CRXN470D would be a huge step up from what he has and paired with decent speakers you can't get a better mini system around that price! Not only do they sound great you've got the CD player, Bluetooth input and output and wireless streaming!
