The car has looked second best all weekend. Struggled in the early stages of the race. Made the right calls. 7-time world champion.

Looking forward to all the straws people clutch at to try downplay this one.

Crofty licking Hamilton’s arse not for the first time this year.

Lol, he was supreme today and deserves all the praise he gets. You're sounding very bitter. Incredible driver.

Bad mistake there at the end by Leclerc.

Perez now 4th in the drivers championship.
Travesty he doesn't have a drive for next season yet......

Ideal for the second RB seat imo

Delighted to see Checo back on the podium :D
Shame it wasn't enough for a top step but happy enough nonetheless. He had a clean race, kept his cool and held his nerve right to the end.

Credit to Vettel for a good drive, Leclerc, Sainz and of course Hamilton all had good drives as well.

“For all the kids out there you can do it too. I believe in you man.”

    God he’s an insufferable cnut.

But he achieved the impossible, he has equalled a record.

Huge fair play for LH in the end. Worked out well for him that worn slicks would be the optimum tyre, but he had a clean and hard race and won it by miles.

  • Registered Users Posts: 515 ✭✭✭Lawlesz

Delighted for Perez and even more delighted for Vettel after all the s*it Ferrari have thrown at him this year.

Cannot stand Hamilton, I find him intolerable, but credit where it's due...

Considering he missed 2 races it's even more impressive. Such an underrated driver

Say what you will about Hamilton but he really is a master of tyre management. He fought tooth and nail for this race.

    Absolutely thrilled for Vettel though!

Great that Vettel was the first to congratulate Hamilton. Greatest person? Up for debate. Greatest driver right now? No question.

Super performance from Lewis to win the World Championship. Whatever you think about him, that was a great drive today, one of his best.

Looked a lot worse than 2nd best, to be fair!

Delighted for Seb, rookie mistake from Charles. Another brilliant drive from the champ and another awful performance from Bottas.

For a casual F1 fan that was such good fun to watch. Great for my home team to get 2nd, Northamptonshire's finest (well we can claim Mercedes too!)

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

Might be red bull, but Perez at Mercedes would be handy

It will prob be Bottas though, they want a no 2 driver, not a competitor

They mixed up the flags for Vettel and Perez

Here is an odd one (think I'm correct ,maybe) only three drivers on the grid were at the last Turkish GP , all three made the podium today .

Nice on them to have a spinning Ferrari as part of the podium display ;)

Vettel, Hamilton and Kimi? Not arsed checking who else was around in 2011, Perez and Bottas there yet? I still can't believe it's 9 years since the last one.

Rai skipped the 2011 season. Just Ham, Per, and Vet

Probably that ****e champagne alternative they use in Muslim countries, didn't think that Turkey would be that strict though.

Wonder what spin he'll put on it, but knowing him he'll just go around in circles

Albon had the chance for ultimate redemption, but he came out 2nd best yet again today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,711 ✭✭✭This is it

Delighted for Vettel, fantastic start, kept his head and a well deserved podium. So disappointed in LeClerc after doing so well to get himself in that position. Delighted for Perez too, hope he finds a seat

Clearly thought he was earning points for his pirouettes that counted towards the championship.

Only a little bit , on paper this was his teammates race and I found Max to be very rash today in his decisions , He expected everything. Also Albon got caught as a lot of teams did , you either took the second set of inters early or not at all. Which seems to have been the difference down the grid . Sainz ,Charles and Vettel took them early . Albon , Stroll , took them later and never really recovered . Third choice was Bottas strategy and power boat for the day . Albon avoided that

Well that was a masterclass from LH and a fitting way to wrap up the title. What money would you have got on him lapping Bottas at 10 o'clock this morning. Remarkable. Shame from Stroll that he didn't get on the podium in the end, at least RP got Checo there, good drive from him. Happy for Ferrari that they finally had a competitive day. Both drivers did really well. Good to see Vettel going well after a torrid year. Definitely one red bull will feel they left behind considering how strong they were all weekend. Max's spin and flat spotting his tyres was pretty silly. He's been running around 3rd for most of the season, so we've not had a chance to see that side of him this year. Needs to learn from days like today.

Good race though not the destruction derby that was envisaged this morning. All drivers deserve credit for that. Can't believe there wasn't a single safety car. Great to see this track back though, hope it returns to the calendar again.

Poor old Stroll, it all went wrong through no fault of his own.

Hamilton and Perez and masters of the dark arts of tyre management.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,382 ✭✭✭lolie

Would've been good to see rain a few laps from the end for a bit more excitement.
Whatever about Hamilton been dominant or lucky his tyre management compared to most other drivers is incredible

As for Bottas, it must kill other drivers to see a driver like Bottas perform so poorly but yet keep getting signed up by Mercedes.
This pretty much sums him up

The guy continuously finishes second for Mercedes with Lewis first which is perfect for Mercedes as it gives them max points. How exactly could Mercedes improve with a replacement? Why would they want someone to constantly challenge Hamilton for the win it doesn't make sense, from the teams point of view Botas is perfect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,041 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

Yep, today was a terrible day for him, but they've already won the constructors, and will likely have their drivers first and second in the drivers championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,170 ✭✭✭chicorytip

Albon did well enough - in comparison to his team mate. I can't see Red Bull appointing Perez. He just does not seem the right fit for that team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,498 ✭✭✭Harika

At least no one can blame racing point for using Perez as guinea pig for stroll.
Also Vettel, Leclerc and sainz all started outside of the top 10 and Leclerc long time at the back of the field with a courageous call then to nearly get to the podium.
Will be interesting to unravel why the race suddenly turned in Hamilton favour, cause until halfway it strongly looked like racing point and red bull would fight it out.

Exactly, they want to keep Hamilton happy above all else, Bottas is perfect as he doesn't rock the boat, any of the top drivers out there in a Mercedes would be demanding to win the Championship, Bottas knows his limits and is happy to take the back seat, as for him that seat is as safe as houses.

It's surely doing reputational damage to their brand though (which is literally the only reason they're in the sport - this isn't a pure racing team like Williams or McLaren or the like)

For example, McLaren's most iconic car which is still well remembered is not the one that Hakkinen or Hamilton won titles with, it's the one that Prost and Senna battled each other in. If you google "McLaren F1 car" it appears just under the current one and well ahead of any other. If you google "Most iconic F1 cars" it's right there at the top.

No matter who Mercedes puts in the two cars, they're guaranteed both titles before a wheel is turned thanks to the hardware they have and the rules that are stacked in their favour. So why not put two good drivers in the car, surely that would get them in the headlines more and get more exposure for the brand and it's sponsors?

People still fondly remember that McLaren, even though it was just as dominant as the Mercedes, albeit over one season rather than 7. If you load up a computer game where players can customise their cars, the most popular livery for every McLaren road car by far is a Marlboro one. The brand and the sponsors of that era are still getting free advertising 30 years later.

Almost nobody will fondly remember the hybrid era, or praise Mercedes for seeking out the worst driver they could find after Hamilton was shown up and beaten by Rosberg. Anyone who follows the sport closely will know there are huge question marks over whether Hamilton could succeed with a decent team mate, and everyone who doesn't closely follow the sport will have long since switched off out of boredom.
