I remember bringing empty lemonade bottles back to the shop and getting your deposit back. Halfpenny usually. If you came upon one when out and about..... WooHoo....

Collecting wax chewing gum wrappers.......when you got the set you sent them off for a free camera or football. There was always one wrapper that was almost impossible to get. Someone came upon a shop in Ringsend that always had the rare ones. We had many pilgrimages to that shop.......and sore jaws.

If cooking pasta, I'll boil the water on the hob from cold. A lot of people boil the required amount in the kettle and then pour it into the saucepan. I prefer the other method.

My uncle still has a large pot of hot water in the range for washing purposes. He uses a kettle on the has hob to boil water for the tae.
Doesn't possess an electric kettle, and no desire for one.

My brother injured himself quite badly in the mid eighties in the park due to their complete lack of basic health and safety. He spent a summer in hospital because of it and it was not down to his messing.

There was no suing back then. The owner seen that his hospital bills were taken care of and that he wanted for nothing when Christmas came around.

That was great fun. It was great to explore half built houses - we never did any damage, just a look around was the thrill.

I'm surprised these are still going and I'd be more surprised if anybody under 60 is watching them. And at that even most of their core audience got bored of them when they became obsessed with "issues".

Yet back in the day pretty much everyone from 10 to 90 was watching them. There wouldn't be too many people in their 30's upwards who couldn't tell you who Jim McDonald or Jack and Vera were. I doubt 98% of people could name a current character. I've come across it the odd time and it just seems so strange all there in brght digital HDTV.

Coronation Street still pulls about half a million viewers in Ireland; so I'd expect at least that ~12% to be able to name current characters.

Agree 100%. Jps Lotus in black and gold, Marlboro McLaren and the Rothmans Williams. Think even Eddie Jordan got in on the act with Benson and Hedges...

Soft and disposable contact lenses. I got my first lenses as a teenager, around 1980, probably the only luxury in the house as I really didn't want to wear glasses.

They were GP (gas permeable) lenses, that had to be boiled once a week to keep them clean. They cost about £300 a pair, which was serious money in those days - so they got some serious care and attention. I remember having a gang of lads combing through grass on a camping weekend looking for the one I dropped, and somebody did indeed manage to find it. Some of the lenses needed to be soaked weekly with a 'deproteinising tablet' that smelt like rotten eggs, but did the job.

Today I wear monthly disposables that cost about €5 each, and this tiny piece of flimsy plastic is designed to rotate into a particular position on my eye to address astigmatism.
