Hope this is the correct area

Can anyone tell me where the ads on an Internet radio are coming from? Irish station, Irish ads, USA station, USA ads etc

So who is putting these ads on the radio before the station is accessed?

    The Radio Station?
    The Broadband provider?
Has the Radio itself has some type of tech built in to receive info from someone else?

Depends on which app you're using - if it's Tunein for example, that is the company that is serving (and being paid for) the ads

No it's an internet radio, a physical radio.

It'll be the company that manufacture the radio I guess? Either that or whoever they pay for the radio service (could be Tunein)

Do you mean add's appearing on the actual radio, or adds in the audio steam of the station you are listening to.

For example, if you were listening to RTÉ Radio one, the adds would be the "normal" adds you get if you would listen on FM.

On a lot of stations, the ad comes on once you hit the station, after that you'd have the regular ads once connected to the station.

Take Today fm for example, hit the preset, an (irish) random ad comes on, then it connects to the station and you have normal radio like you were listening on FM

Today FM are doing that themselves. Its annoying because there are already ads in the stream.

For devices that use TuneIn, they have also recently being adding their own ads to a stream before it starts playing. Also annoying.

If you are accessing a direct feed (e.g. going to rte.ie) or using a device that access a direct feed, which a lot of internet radio do, then it's the stations ads you listening to, if you are using a Google or Amazon device then you are listening to their ads, that's where they make their money after all. Lots of stations are doing sponsors bits now or product placement to get around this, but TV programmes have been doing that for years.

Google/Amazon don't insert ads at the start of station streams - it's TuneIn doing this. The broadcaster and the device manufacturer have no control over it. TuneIn are in trouble... they need the money! :)

The pro version of the TuneIn app removes the "pre-roll" ads they themselves insert.

"TuneIn Pro is a special version of the TuneIn app that, for a one-time fee, removes visual display ads and pre-roll commercials that normally play before content begins."

I've noticed this coming up on podcasts where there were none before. Irish ads on non-Irish podcasts e.g. BBC 5 Live's Wittertainment. iirc, there was a notice explaining why 'supported by advertising' - fair enough, they've got bills to pay. Different to podcasts where a sponsor is on board, though.

I trim the intro by ~30 seconds on Pocketcasts.
