Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

We all know lockdowns on their own don’t work. We have also been testing and contact tracing, wearing masks, social distancing etc I have no idea how you don’t know this.

Lockdowns reduce the number of contacts everyone has which makes contact tracing a lot easier and faster.

Have we though? Have we effectively done the following - "detect, test, isolate and care for every case, and trace every contact"? If so, why has it not worked? If not, why not?

It’s funny because the morning after that tweet from Fergal, Tony made a rare radio appearance where he specifically blamed “social gatherings” for a rise in cases, pretty much a blatant attempt to deflect from HSPC data showing where cases and clusters really are!

And he done it first thing in the morning ensuring that when most people wake up and read the news, it’s his comments plastered on the front page and not anything from the HSPC, he’s very clever like that with the media!

If you are honestly trying to argue that we’re not doing any testing or tracing then I’m putting you on ignore.

It's really inappropriate for him to make his own comments like this which contradict the government policy. Supposedly only an advisor? Think again as he undermines the government constantly.

I'm convinced he and the government collude at all stages of decision making and this 'good cop bad cop' schtick is played up for public consumption.

Put me on ignore then as you clearly can't read what I am saying (I'll give you a hint, I said "effectively")

Can you link the HSPC data that says the virus doesn’t spread at social gatherings?

Is a school a social gathering?

So you agree then, lockdowns aren’t the only measure we’ve been using. Glad we cleared that up.

Never said different. Anyway, back to what I did say. Have we effectively done the following - "detect, test, isolate and care for every case, and trace every contact"? If so, why has it not worked? If not, why not?

I actually think that NPHET want to run the show for the duration of the pandemic and try to force the government's hand.

Obviously people socialise at school but from the government and NPHETs perspective I don’t think they would classify them as the same no. Social gatherings are technically not necessary (at least in the short term), education is.

I do think they should try have the schools closed more and do more stuff online. But the infrastructure isn’t really there.

What is short term, noting we're 9 months inot this?

Probably not as good as we could be doing, but not terrible either. If people would reduce their social contacts like they’ve been asked to do numerous times the contact tracing would get a lot easier. All these measures require public cooperation to work, if the public ignore what they’re being asked to do you can’t really turn around and blame the government for it.

Probably another 9 months so a year and a half in total.

What I’m getting at was Fergal’s tweet about not a single recorded cluster from pubs and restaurants since they reopened (from the HSPC last Wed, you can find it easily if you want to)

So Tony was straight out to deflect from that report blaming social gatherings, but his comments were clearly directed at people on the piss etc. He even went on a bit of an anti alcohol rant, I don’t know if it was the same interview but he was quoted as saying “the virus loves alcohol” or something of the sort!

I would suspect that fergal is talking out his arse. The virus will spread anywhere that people are together so saying it’s not happening in restaurants is nonsense.

He was referring to a HSPC report published on Wed morning. It was even discussed in this thread at the time! If you want to disagree with the accuracy of such a report that’s your choice.

I don't agree. People's opinion of Tony in here is completely at odds with the general public. It's like an echo chamber of views that have become more and more toxic as time has moved on. If it's looked at objectively, he's trying to advise people by giving public health advice. What's the problem with that?

It's not inappropriate and it's not contradicting government policy. It's also not undermining the government.

He couldn’t help himself in getting in his anti alcohol position either on morning Ireland.have been convinced for yrs that there’s plenty in the hse that want every pub in this country shut forever and this virus is the perfect cover for it.
For yrs we have had to listen to bs about being more European and their cafe culture.been there done that and bored to death.and I’m not a big drinker and couldn’t give a damn if I hadn’t a drink for the next 6months.

Just because there haven’t been outbreaks in restaurants and pubs doesn’t mean that the virus isn’t spreading in restaurants and pubs. When they do contact tracing they only look at the previous 48 hours afaik. It will spread anywhere that people are together.

Yes because Twitter is a bastion of logic and common sense

You quoted me. It was my response to someone else who said that. I didn't say you said it. I was reinforcing it because you were saying something that bore no relation to what I was talking about.

So, if it's just him and he has some kind of personal vendetta against hospitality, why are they doing the same in the north? Why are they doing the same in Britain? Why has it happened across Europe? That Tony fella has some influence if they're all copying him.

These venues were open across Europe for months while closed here. Try harder.

Yeah this global vendetta against hospitality industry is quite bizarre I must say. I wonder is Tony at the centre of it all? We all know he hates the pubs

No. Why would I? I'd imagine it would be like the comments section after a Daily Mail article. Poisonous shíte.
