Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

RTE has already gone into misery porn overload. They are already declaring this new strain as more contagious and deadly than the existing strain, without a shred of evidence. Nolan on the radio now telling people to more or less stay away from each other, limit the time in others homes, wear a mask, and open all the windows. I'll be taking a hard pass on those thank you very much. He's more or less saying he wants to completely lockdown everything but is "optimistic" people can prove him wrong. How exactly is that possible when NPHET are going to have everything shutdown on Jan 2nd.

The way they are going on now is that they are doing us a favour by allowing people see each other at Christmas. The arrogance is a sight to behold.
They’re panicking. Why not give current measures a chance before closing non-essential retail again? Why not put limits on the amount of people allowed into shops, etc before a blanket closure.
Major outbreak at UHG, 40 junior doctors affected. This is where we should be investing our money, not closing shops and paying more PUP.

Nolan was shîtêing on about "temporal" infections this morning to justify shutting them down. It was a clever way of him saying they haven't a dickie bird where it's coming from so just close it all down.

So, theoretically you agree but think it's too difficult to make it work...and then agree that it actually did work in Laois, Offaly and Kildare. Okay.

Ah yes, the stunning success of the lockdown in Kildare whereby the whole county was locked down on the basis of a small outbreak in one tiny village.

And the people infected in that village were free to travel around the rest of the county spreading the virus.

Ah yes, taking my post out of context. I was talking about targeting restrictions to the counties with the highest numbers rather than blanket countrywide rules.

Its going to be very hard to prise NYPHET from power now,

Ah yes, and it's the 'lockdowners' who are full of hyperbole and over-exaggeration......:p

The government don't have to 'override' anything because, surprise surprise, it's not NPHET who are calling the shots......they don't have any 'power' to do anything.

They have become the bogey man in all this, probably by design. They are there to issue advice and guidance, it is the Government who ultimately decide on whether or not to follow it. There are multiple other bodies and boards and councils and teams with input into those decisions, it's just Big Bad Tony is on the telly so they get all the flak.

Ask yourself this......Do you not reckon there's other interest groups with the exact opposite goals? How likely is it that there's someone whispering in MM's ear "never mind the ICU figures, the country is on its knees, we need to open up completely with zero restrictions"?

Because I'd say its almost 100%. They listen to all the stakeholders, then make an informed decision. Or at least, they should be. Anyone who thinks they have 'power' or they are calling the shots and cabinet need to override them is delusional.

You claimed the Kildare lockdown was a success but you refused to acknowledge that the government allowed it to spread around the rest of the county and that people were unnecessarily put out of work.

    Not really a success, then.

A 'small outbreak in a tiny village' spread it around the entire county and then on to Dublin and put people unnecessarily out of work? Link?

If this tiny outbreak did all that, sure shut down the country instead. Put more people unnecessarily out of work. Great logic.

I see Philip Nolan was on the radio ramping up pressure for more restrictions.

    https://www.google.ie/amp/s/amp.independent.ie/news/professor-nolan-urges-profound-caution-over-christmas-in-the-interest-of-your-family-and-friends-39897650.html

Prof Nolan admitted he was not confident current restrictions, as constraining as they are, will be enough to stop the sudden surge in cases but called on the Irish people to “prove me wrong”.

Your post is ironic to the point of being comedy gold considering you label everyone illiterate and yet cannot grasp the difference between "TO" AND "TOO". Thanks really , that was david brent stuff. Going into town now to shop or as you call it "the trenches"..

Impressive rant for a typo on a mobile. I hate to be around if you really had something to get worked up about.

The people put out of work referred to those who lost their jobs as a result of the unnecessary county lockdown when any lockdown should've been localised.

But kudos to the government for the sledgehammer to a nut approach.

Surely a better option than a countrywide lockdown, no?

i heard Luke O'Neill on pat kenny this morning , ill give him this hes very positive, thats why he hasnt been heard on RTE much. He says that he cant see much need for restrictions after paddys day, just keep up masks in public and handwashing. No need for pubs/nightclubs closed as he says if 90% of vulnerable people are vaccinated which he says they should be then its a very easy disease on vast majority , being the hospitals and ICU numbers will be too low to justify a business shutting. Like how many over 70s are in coppers every night? in the midst of all the panic and drudgerry , you almost forget we are only trying to stop ICU and hospitals being overcrowded, surely when this is achieved through vaccine , everything including coppers opens up without restriction. Enter at oyur own risk then

We become lazy and complacement. Not entirely stupid yet so this most likely end up the same way irish water billing adventure ended up.
Give it a little more time. Few more interviews of mad professors and tony h doom scenarios. One day soon people will have enough of this nonsense and put an end to it. There is no other way around it.

Sure its simple really .Allow rural Bars in areas where there are no cases to allow 15 people meet and socialize in a totally law abiding environment .Let the Publican keep his state entitlements because he or she would not be making money .The upside is the joy some people living alone would have from meeting and chatting and still be safe .Covid 19 passes through people who stay too close .It is now established it does not survive on surfaces or on bank notes .Stay well apart in small numbers and I feel its safe .

Never watch Rte but in the parents today

    The headline

    2 deaths
    1025 cases
    25 ICU

How anyone can tell me that they are not trying to scare people why would you put the total ICU cases into a headline with the daily cases

Parents think the world is ending

    Some joke

    People have no perspective.

I would like to compare total hospital figures with Xmas day last year

The death rate was an improvement in 2020

The ICU rates, which are the only rates which matter really, have been stable for months now, before the last lockdown, through the last lockdown and currently.

We are being taken for a ride.

We apparently have a new strain, much more transmittable then the previous strain...which we couldn't contain, so we are locking down again...

The ICU rates will drop after the flu season around mid february, vaccine or no vaccine, until then our everyday liberties will be traded with us like we are children.

There are elderly people in this country who spent Christmas day alone out of nothing but fear, it is a disgrace.

When the nursing homes are vaccinated we need to see a bit of give as regards visits to those in residential care
