I think he was talking about some people will stay wfh, everyone will be more careful about hand sensitisation and hygiene and people will probably wear masks during flu seasons when in crowded areas even after this is all over.

    No scaremongering then.

Garda Security and Operation Centre site open today, much to my surprise. Doesn't seem to fall into any of the categories - not an utility infrastructure.

    (h) the repair, maintenance and construction of critical transport and utility infrastructure;
    https://cif.ie/coronavirus/#statements

Called the local Gardai station. They were not very pleased that I suggesting a Garda construction site was not essential. Told me to call the HSE. HSE then directed me to the HSA (Health and Safety Authority).

Disappointing but not surprising. At this rate big construction will remain fully open and only the small builders will be penalised.

Writing from Portugal. Enjoying a pint outdoors, social distancing being observed everywhere and masks mandatory even outdoors. I have a second home in northern Portugal and have not socialised with anyone other than my gf (we've social distanced for 2 weeks before traveling and we've traveled together).

Cases here are high but have not exploded and the health system, and test system, are coping with the recent rise in cases. No fear mongering from government. No one being turned away from hospitals.

Very strict curfews during the weekends. Everything shut from 1pm - and I mean everything, even essential retail.

Portugal isn't perfect, no place is, but it does seem that they're learning to live with covid.

We really need to hear what he actually said, not what people want to think he said. Honestly, I wonder if hanging around these Covid threads and posting constantly on them is adversely affecting the mental health of some people.

It has always been the case that essential workers have to work and people appreciate them.

What essential work has the facebook post prevented you from doing? Would her post have hurt your feelings less had she included an asterisked footnote explaining that you obviously weren't included because you're special?

Lol. Did I say I was an essential worker?

I've been working from home from March, but unlike people like you, I can empathise with those who haven't been as fortunate as me.

Keep up those rational, well thought out responses Donny.

To be fair, NPHET / govt. reckons we are at or close to peak. It's going to seem crap for a while because we have such a large case number but it is dropping.

So you are sitting on your arse at home. Typing out a message on an anonymous message board. Moaning about some random girl sitting on her arse at home and posting on facebook asking people to stay in their homes.

Is it just that you interpreted her post literally and maybe you thought she was asking everyone - doctors and nurses and guards and ESB workers and delivery workers etc? Is that really the issue maybe? Were you worried that some doctors might see her post and decide they better stay at home because Facebook told them to?
Because most people would understand that it is implicit in the message that essential workers have to work and most of us appreciate them for it.

So what do you actually think yourself - should people stay at home in lieu of non-essential journeys outside? You're sneering at some girl but haven't actually put your own position down.

Here is mine - I definitely think that people should stay at home. Now, just in case you get confused - I don't mean doctors or nurses or delivery men or Tesco workers etc. I mean people who are "just popping down to the shops" 5 times a week. I mean the people who want to go and visit their buddy with a few cans. etc. etc. If you don't objectively absolutely have to make that journey, then don't.

Case number peak and ICU peak are not exactly the same

    Heard that.

I’ve been saying along, if we continue to implement restrictions using the metrics seen in October when level 5 was mandated for 6 weeks, the restrictions won’t end until the nation is bankrupt.

Good. Maybe when their paychecks and pensions are in jeopardy they might smarten up and reform the system.

I'm done being lectured to about still needing to sacrifice by a group of clowns who have sacrificed nothing this whole time.

Once again, jumping to some irrational conclusions on what you think I said versus what I actually did say.

Go for a walk and calm yourself Donny. If you say 3 hail mary's before leaving, the plague won't catch you. Good luck.

The end is in sight they wont change trajectory now. Expect a glacial rollout. You can also bask in the years of budget cuts and relentless questioning by the covid complicit hypocrite media , when they start questioning the cost andvhandling of this crisis, it will start pretty soon and go on for years ! Could even bring down the government at some point, depends how manageable the states debt is...

Ridiculous. Just stock up more when good offers on. They should use this opportunity to ban smoking areas in pubs, clubs etc in my opinion, under guide of public health. Crack down massively on drink related social smoking...

    Of hospitalizations?

Unfortunately unless something unnatural happens all the indications are we are not.

There is green shoots in positive rate, but we are certainly missing cases, probably quite a few. Today's data and data for the next 5-7 days will speak volumes.

If the new strain is more transmissible and becomes dominant, fúck knows, it seems to becoming "angrier" in the UK.

Have you looked at any of the research behind the policy initiative, or should we just go by the views of Newstalk jocks?

The Government policy to reduce the harm done by alcohol goes WAY beyond Tony, though I know it might suit some people to set up a bogeyman.

And raising the price a few quid will make no more difference to people with alcohol additions than putting in stupid partitions and moving the alcohol to the corner of the supermarket did.

All it will do is cause other issues for them and any family they might have, as well as inconvenience the rest (and vast majority) of us who can handle a few drinks without an isue.

It's no wonder you picked that username with the constant bang of arrogance in everything you post.

Let me justify my position for you cause you'll be upset if I don't.

No I don't think people should stay at home regardless of whatever journey the government and people like you have deemed "essential".

What's essential to you, might not be essential to me. Human's have different needs and desires, almost like all human's are wired differently, it's so crazy right?

Keep your distance, wash your hands, if you have symptoms, stay away from people. All things I assumed were common sense before the hysteria took over. But 2020's thrown all rational thinking straight out the window.

I'll sit tight and await the expected "selfish" rhetoric.

    It's not rhetoric.

Is this self-definition of "essential" a millennial thing?

"It is extremely essential to my personal well being and sense of self that I have 20 buddies around for cans" - I mean, surely that should be allowed if a person feels it essential then? no?

In all of your ranting and raving, did you ever take a deep breath to just appreciate the fact that people who have dedicated their lives to studying and fighting infectious diseases disagree with your "opinion". And to consider that maybe, just maybe, their opinion is a little more valid than some random anonymous fella sitting on his arse behind a keyboard since March.

    I'll listen to them, thanks

Based on what Leo is saying, it’s more or less lockdown until summer. Probably schools and construction will reopen. Maybe non essential retail.

I’ll be shocked if restaurants open before summer. Depressing times ahead. Wish I could see the suicide stats for last year.

You can't expect them to open the restaurants after the last performance in fairness.

Amount of stories i heard or meeting people for food and picking up the virus over xmas is unreal.

Level 3 after Paddys day and i say restaurants in May

I travel, so not calling you out on that at all, but I do acknowledge that it is non essential, so in breach of guidelines.

It is just more than a little disingenuous of you to moan about the definition of ‘essential’ when it comes to the construction work, while taking your own very liberal interpretation of ‘essential’ when it comes to your own travel
