Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Plenty of public health experts are of the opinion that do nothing. So it depends on whom you ask, I suppose.

I'm specifically talking about the 4 countries you mentioned.

So again, how does what you "think" trump what they have said help suppress the virus in their countries?

Can you explain why they appear to have made no difference in Spain, Peru, the Philippines and Italy, where they are mandatory everywhere?

I'm pretty sure they are not mandatory everywhere.

But show me the proof they haven't made a difference?

When this ****e is all over (hopefully sooner rather than later) what will still stay in society ?

I think social distancing might stay in an extent but tbh it always existed pre covid. Mask wearing might also still be around

    Not in Coppers it wont

Looks like the vaccines are already here. Convoy of three large trucks moving at slow speed through Sandyford with security van following and a large police escort incl helicopter.

It was the Christmas coca cola trucks.

The demonisation of Tony Holohan is laughable. I don't agree with everything NPHET suggests but the notion that he alone is setting out to spoil everyone's fun and is some sort of Rasputin figure is overestimating his importance.

I think the fact that Holohan overestimates his own importance is what annoys people
He is there to advise the Government ,not dictate to them and not throw a tantrum when they do not follow his advice

Good news in the IT article this morning entitled "First vaccines for elderly and high-risk groups likely to be available in January". Level 3 looks like the lowest level for January/February and the talk of another level 5 extreme lockdown was just to keep Tony Holohan and his mob happy. We are nearly through this BS!

"Meanwhile Taoiseach Micheál Martin told a meeting of his parliamentary party that he does not envisage having to close sectors such as non-essential retail again, even if restrictions are re-introduced after Christmas. Non-essential shops and services reopened for the first time in six weeks on Tuesday with the situation due to be reviewed by Government in the New Year. Mr Martin told Fianna Fáil TDs and senators that there is “light at the end of the tunnel” in the fight against Covid-19 and that Ireland will have access to more vaccines, potentially up to ten, as part of the European framework agreement".

    Why are they only likely
Surely they should definitely be available early January

Taiwan has gone more than 200 days without a single case. It seems nothing will do for the government there. If there's no medical justification for Taiwan not being back to normal then the only reason I can think of as to why they continue to insist that people wear masks is because they want to control them. What other reason could there be?

I guess I just don't have such a cynical attitude.I imagine when the threat from COVID has dissipated mask mandate will end in Taiwan. They're probably just acting cautiously. East Asian governments have been probably what we'd consider over the top in the level of their fastidiousness with regards testing , cleanliness etc and compliance from general population, and that shows in the case numbers. What do the government benefit from the population wearing masks?

    I hope you're right.

The benefit would be to maintain control over people.

183 cases but the headline says they are likely under reported? I smell a big pile of dung that comes from NPHET and TH's bitterness that they are running out of data to pump the fear narrative.

Another day closer to the end of this nightmare.

Now, who is going for some late shopping this evening?

How do you know they made no difference, had they not been mandatory the figures might have been doubled or even more of what they had? anyhow this discussion should be for the Mask Thread.

    Exactly my thought.
The number of reported positive decreased immediately when the lockdown started, people were celebrating the success of the decision and invoked more restrictions because the proof was in the numbers.
Is it fair to say now that the decision of reopening is also beneficial? the proof is in the numbers right?
What's the argument of the lockdown brigade now?

No, that is complete nonsense obviously.

The hope is the effects of level 5 will continue for 7-10 days after lifting it.

We are only hours into relaxation of restrictions and the numbers have plummeted.

    Excellent news.

Oh please. He has spent the last two weeks gaslighting us all via twitter, media interviews and doing his utmost to block Level 5 being lifted.
A lot of poster's worry-o-meter's seem to be on the increase on here now that Level 5 is gone, Tony H will be delighted with that. The rest of us are back out living. Great to see the shops busy, efficiently run, and most importantly, the vast majority of people are not afraid to go out and about and live their lives.

I just hope that once the vaccine rollout happens we'll stop these daily NPHET briefings and open up completely.....

So the positive are decreasing because of the lockdown and we will only see a surge in 7-10 days, how come at the beginning of the lockdown the positive were decreasing? the 7-10 days was not valid anymore? :pac:

I don't think Tony will exit stage left too quickly or too quietly
He is enjoying the spotlight and the perceived sense of power too much
Didn't he come back from his break early to announce lockdown
Luke O Neill and Sam McConkey certainly will not go quietly

Really? you'll have no problem offering up an example so of this "tantrum throwing" exercise he has been charged with.

Well yes, restrictions decrease the level of virus in the community opening up again increases that level.

This isn't new or hard to understand TBF.

    What exactly is confusing you?

I'm afraid I'm out living life at the moment, but if you check through my posts there are many many examples of it. I don't have anything personal against Dr Holohan or NPHET members. However, the fact they effectively 'ran the country' from March onwards was a disaster - basically a focus group with Covid being their only concern. Clearly Dr Holohan had to be over-ruled for any sort of summer reopening and as soon as he returned, we're closed again.
The Government didn't stand up to them soon enough, and allowed themselves to get 'boxed in' to decisions on spurious data predictions of which none materialised. All the while Billions being flushed down the toilet, our mental health going to the dogs, jobs being haemorrhaged, cancer screening being paused, and diagnosis missed. The IMF are very close to coming to town if things don't change for 2021, and don't even get me started on our banks...

So that's a no, you have no evidence of him throwing a tantrum?

    Fair enough.

I read that Tony Holohan has said "social distancing measures" will still be in place when we are vaccinated. No doubt he said it before but it worries me. Even with the vulnerable and elderly vaccinated, all others at risk, will there still be a Nphet briefing us on what to do and not do? Regular reminders to continue with mask wearing and no large gatherings?

What do people here think will happen come the summer time?

I don't think so either. 2020 has seen the rise of the expert.

What worries me is what if we only manage to get 60% or so vaccinated? Will these daily case counts and cyclic lockdowns just continue indefinitely?
