I didn't think it was possible to have a question topic as an arch-nemesis, but congratulations, you've managed to find one

Hmmm.......well that's a good explanation....can we have an elf question tomorrow ? like how many elves does it take to change a light bulb :D?

    :D:D

Or can we have a question about Elf the movie? It's kinda my specialist subject.

I'm glad I went against my gut on this one based on those two previous posts.

I just hope that loads of people thought the same way as me, having seen the actual answer! Let's just say that I'm looking for a big divergence to bring me close to the median!

She's a very fit looking lady. I hope I haven't guessed too low.

TBH I think I went ridiculously high. I swore I wouldn't look at the correct answer today until the reveal.....

I looked at that pic and literally wondered - I wonder how sharp that axe is, having just bought a small axe for cutting firewood and discovering that no matter how good the axe, there is some wood its not going to go though!

You’ve got to lodge the axe in, looksee, then lift the axe with log attached and BANG it down to split it.

In retrospect, my answer is just embarassing for this one.

My answer is **** , nothing new there , and it all really depends on the sharpness of the axe and how thick (or not) the tree trunks are .

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,434 ✭✭✭✭looksee

That works if the axe head following the log is a heavy one. My axe is more hatchet sized! Alternatively you wedge the axe in then swing at the back of the axe with a (small) sledge hammer. That works! What you have to remember is that I will not see 70 again so my options for swinging things are getting a bit limited :D

It's the motion in the ocean that counts!

Doesn't matter how sharp the axe is if you don't use one!

While you wait you may enjoy this video of the world tree felling competition. Not exactly Christmas trees, but one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen!

EN I think I'd sooner have a minor dental procedure than watch a tree felling event :p

You don't know what you're missing!

    OK, we're all aboard :D

    The correct answer today is...

The most Christmas trees chopped in two minutes is 27 by Erin Lavoie (USA) achieved on the set of Guinness World Records: Die GroBten Weltrekorde in Germany, on 19 December 2008.

See you back here at 8 for the reveal :)

Omg!!! I'm pretty damn close to that!!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,955 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

Problem is I know this one as part of school quiz but does everyone else, tarnation!!!

I've given this a lot of thought! :D Ten seconds or so of thought. And if they're all in and around the size in that photo then... Maybe one tree every five seconds. Now surely I get to sit on Ted's damn lap???

Right so I was pleased with my maths yesterday so I wonder can I continue with that today? Assuming that's actually the lady in question in the photo and that's the type of trees she was cutting down???? I reckon she could get that kind of tree cut in about 3-4 strokes. So if we say she takes about 10 seconds to cut each tree that would be............maths..............

Again with the trees!?! Some might start to think that you've got some really weird Christmas tree fetish.

Seriously, where do you find these weird questions? :D Right, I’m picturing this in my head and visualising the girth of a 7 footer ;)
    Chop
    Chop
    Chop
    Push

How quickly can one possibly chop down a tree, assuming they're proper trees and not fake plastic ones like Radiohead sing about? P.S. It's my birthday today so I want some bonus points, I'm sure everyone else won't mind! :p

World records, normally these are done under perfect conditions, no faffing about in forests deciding which tree you'll chop next. They were probably lined up and a certain circumference. So she's probably taking mere seconds to chop a tree down if she's got her technique perfected......

Okay. Here's my reasoning. You can count 60 seconds in one minute, so you can count 60 twice in two minutes. That's 120. However, you can actually count faster than that, possibly 100 a minute, which would be 200 in two minutes. Then, you have to allow for the "swing effort" - can you chop down a tree in one second? And even if you could, can you do it consistently? As you get into a rhythm, maybe you will manage to do more than one tree per second. On balance, I think we are back to a tree a second.

Ah lord , that's like how much wood did a woodchuck chuck :pac:

Based on two chops and a step to position oneself for next tree ie Position...Aim...Chop...Chop...I reckon you can't do a tree quicker than 4 seconds so I'll say 5 seconds per tree giving...ah ****e....I forgot the time you mentioned...

Will today be the day I propel myself into the top 3 from the top 5? Dun Dun Duuuuuun

I'm gonna round down the actual answer... Play the crowd here

Well I hope I've learned my lesson from the Die Hard debacle - work out the absolute maximum it could possibly be in an ideal, utopian, impossible world, and work backwards from there. Very backwards.
Soooo....2 good hard chops in the right place might bring down a tree..... that'd take 2 seconds. Could she keep that up for 2 minutes??? She looks like a fit lady.... So, that would be 60 trees.
Then you have to allow time to get from tree to tree, add a second. Then there's the odd one that doesn't come down after 2 chops. Then she might tire and slow a bit towards the end. Am I overthinking this just a little bit, maybe.

Well, I reckon if you know what you're doing you could fell a tree in one swift motion and if your pace is good you could average 2 trees per second. Presumably the more you chop down though you have to cover a certain amount of space to get to the next tree, so including steps to next tree I'm gonna knock that average down to 1.5 per second, and then I'm gonna round up to the nearest hundred and tack on a few extra because she's better than average. It seems like a ridiculous amount so I'm going to regret this, but feck it, based on my peformance thus far its not like I'm gonna win this bloody thing anyway...

Does she have one axe? Is she a two axe wielding lumber Jack? Arms rotating like windmills.....

My extensive re-enactments would suggest it takes an average of 5 blows of an axe to chop through a Christmas Tree...

I had planned on putting our Christmas tree up this weekend, but after all these Christmas Tree questions, I now hate Christmas Trees. How many times can one say Christmas Tree in a sentence about Christmas trees?

Right going stick with the maths. 2 mins =120 seconds and if it’s a world record it has to be quick. So it has to be less than 10 seconds...

Assume it's not the Rockefella tree or Whitehouse tree but a more standard tree as you'd see in a house. Then guesstimate 1 swing of a proper axe, with a proper lumberjack who has trained and practiced for the event...

Oh that's a toughie. Assuming that she has a killer axe, and knows what she is doing (because she is the world record holder). If they are all like the tree in the photo, say 3 swings per tree

Trees again! Are you fecking serious?! :pac:

    I love today's question!!

Well I've absolutely no idea here. Like do they have to count the time it takes moving between trees? How big are they? Like are they a "swing hard enough once and its coming down" or like a massive 70m tall one....

my first guess is one every 5 seconds, 24, then down a little for mishaps, so 20. Then i became more confident at three chopping abilities, and maybe less than 5 seconds per tree, maybe even more than 1 per second. 120 seconds, going to use this as my top limit. 100 for mishaps.

I had a simple principle that if I knew the answer I'd stick with it but on this occasion I think people are going to be too ambitious.

One of these days I'll come up with a witty comment to put in my pm :')

Assuming she can fell a tree with three blows, because why the **** not, and she can make 3 blows in 3 seconds, that would be 40. She may be faster but that seems highly unlikely. Also unlikely she would be that consistent all the way through and from my vast* experience of using an axe those little feckers can get jammed and yanking it free would eat into that time...

What is he using to chop down the tree? A super-dooper chainsaw, or a wooden spoon. Bit of a "here is what you'll become" if he uses a wooden spoon. Surely it would take a good 30 seconds to do one

I'll be very disappointed if she can't do 5 a second
