Hi, I am looking to replace a cpu which I think has packed in. When I switch it on the fan comes on, hard drive light flickers, nothing on the screen, no beep and the pc does not boot up.

It has a Dell motherboard DP/N 02YYK5 and it came with 12mb of RAM. It can take up to 16mb.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Hi

    I don't think its a CPU replacement .
Its either a motherboard or a Powersupply failure I would guess

A few quick things you could try , just to see if it helps .

First is a remove power from the back of the case , and then take of the side panel . On the board is a coin battery shown the image there top right corner .remove it and Leave it out for 30sec , put it back in plug in the power again and see if it turns on
sometimes boot errors can just lock a perfectly good system up

also while you have the side off , look at the tops of all the Aluminium caps , make sure none are bulged up at the top . Use to be a problem years back . but can still happen

you could if you wanted to if you know someone more comfortable swap the motherboard with a replacement

Also while you have the side off, reseat everything, Ram, CPU and adaptor cards. With adaptor cards and ram, add them back in one at a time and try the pc each time in case one of them is faulty and causing the pc not to boot.

Check your usb ports, we had a situation in work one time where someone snapped off a usb drive from the front panel and the end of it shorted the pc resulting in it not booting up, only spotted it by chance as we were about to dump it.
