    Hi,
What sort business would do well trading off being located in close proximity to a successful Cafe in a busy town? A Ladies Boutique is already getting some benefit from the passing trade.

Everything is shutting down due to covid
It's not really the time to open. Look at take away like off licence
Look around to see what shops have shut or will shut

Sounds like you have a premises available and are considering what business to run from it?
If that is the case and apologies for the assumption if it isn't, I would advise that your decision should not be based solely on opinions of what would do well next to an existing business but rather on what you can do well, what you are interested in and have experience in and what the market wants in your location

It generally works the other way, ie the café benefits from the trade the ‘anchors’ bring. Maybe there is parking or some other driver of foot traffic.

If there is a boutique then beauty related or alterations or things like that might be the thing.

    I would say the opposite.

It’s a lot easier to start a business in a recession: lower costs, availability of premises, staff etc.

The severe impacts of COVID are likely to last a few months. It’s likely to take a few months to actually start up in any case. A successful business will last years or even decades. There is and will be a lot of pent-up demand which can be met by those ready and waiting.

Speaking as a business owner whose existing online business opened a bricks-and-mortar shop last year, I would say anything with potential for online sales could thrive. Personally, I would avoid beauty, hairdressing, and nail bars, due to the high probability of further Covid-related lockdowns.

    The figures don't show that.

Last weekend in retail was phenomenal.

Only place not doing a roaring trade is city center Dublin.

Although there are still definitely some good opportunities, it is a brutally competitive market in most places in Ireland. It was over supplied before COVID and I don't believe all will survive.

Not a business for the feint hearted right now.

Dog grooming? It's big business now, ladies who lunch can drop the pooch off to get spruced up and head off for brunch.

100% agree. Impossible to get appointments even pre covid.

We booked the Christmas appointment back in September and "lucky" to get next Tuesday. €45 x 2 dogs.

It's not a huge earner, but it is a consistent earner.
