We were out Saturday and one of the group came down heavily after hitting a bad pothole. He got a good battering but things could have been worse.

I have some first aid but would like to do a course, it was on my todo list this year but ... took over. Is there any places that do first aid courses with a focus on sports? Cycling, odds are you're a distance from help so being able to assess and make someone comfortable while you likely wait for support would be important.

Not sure it's exactly what your after and might be a bit extreme, but in sports I used to be involved in as you worked your way up people would be encouraged to do the REC first aid courses, think it's rescue emergency care. Probably more aimed at hill walkers, climbers, kayakers but some of the stuff could transfer over well or might be overkill for what your looking for.

No idea of this company, just came up when I googled REC courses Ireland

I did a first aid course a few years ago that was customised for cycling guides. It was organised by the company I guide for and the instructor was Ronan Lenihan from Mountain Training Ireland. I don't know if he does regular courses for cyclists but I suspect this was a special for the group of us.

One of the key points was the immediate need to secure the scene of the crash by having unaffected cyclists (or others) alert oncoming traffic that they was an incident and to slow down. I'm sure there have been cases where a secondary accident has been a lot more serious than the initial one.

Mountain biking would probably fall into that category. Came on a guy in pain on a rocky section in Ballyhoura and his bike 30 metres away, no idea if he was injured until figured he was just winded (and actually a doctor!).
We were a good distance from the carpark so would have been waiting probably for a helicopter.

i did mountain first aid years ago and now get the PHECC First Aid Response (FAR) training course through work as one of the first aiders.

only had one incident in the club where we just needed to keep the guy comfortable until the ambulance arrived as it was a pretty heavy concussion.

did my refresher a couple of months ago
