Hi I was advised to get a usb 3.0 hdd for a saorview connect box, is it ok to use a drive that is powered by the receiver or should i get a powered drive ( powered by an external supply)thanks

I can't see the need, USB2.0 will be perfectly fine. I'd get a USB thumb drive if you want one without its own power supply, if the drive has moving parts (for example WD MyPassport etc) go for a powered drive instead as the Saorview Connect box will struggle to power it.
