It's rubbish. Just holding the ball in until they eventually get moving forward. A scrum is to be a method of restarting the game not a way to milk penalties and strangle the game. If they were getting momentum immediately, it would be something. But the ball is available at the base and being held for 2-3 seconds whilst they attempt to generate a secondary shove.

Yeah I was thinking this myself...Ulster held parity in one scrum for about 10 seconds and eventually physics took over...penalty Toulouse

I see nothing wrong with that

If you have scrum parity, it allows you to create attacking space. Its the other team's job to win the scrum and get a penalty or turnover of their own

    You must be a forward!:D

It completely disregards the law book which states a scrum is to be a method of restarting the game with a contest for possession. The scrum has reached a point where it has been successfully established and can be ended. It has been kept up, the ball has reached the base and neither side is moving forward. The contest is over. It should be instructed that the ball be lifted.

Keeping the ball at the base in the hope that you start moving forward is something that can and does spoil a game.

Being really kept in check, hardly know he’s playing.

Well he isn't as effective as he is normally, but I still think we will miss him.

But Id say Reidy (yet again) has been our stand out back row so far.

He has been dirt anytime I've watched previously but Sam Carter has been superb this evening. Untouchable in the air so far and key in Ulster's maul.

Has really improved with some continuity

As Launish says he has stepped it up recently. Very good lineout operator.

I've no idea why Toulouse play Ramos at 10 instead of Ntamack at times. They did the same when they came to Dublin last year and he gave them nothing. He's a much better 15 and Ntamack is a much better 10.

Sure, you can win any argument with Facts

Carter and Coetzee both off now...this is a tough situation now

Some good carries by EOS but you’d want a back there ideally.

The classic I know I messed up but it's not my fault defense. Lol. We've all been there.

Ulster started making mistakes at key times here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,842 ✭✭✭✭bilston

Herring should have made more of the fact that Faumuina eased him out of the way at the back of that lineout.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

Ah poor fringe defence from O’Connor, lost the collision

  • Registered Users Posts: 24,258 ✭✭✭✭Buer

Exceptionally naive from Ulster to put up two pods in their own 22. Toulouse had acres of space to go into and drive forward whilst the Ulster pack were still returning to earth. No flanker at the tail at all doing the basics and keeping an eye on that move.

I think he was arguing that Dupont being offside is what made him pass instead of kick. He was interfering with the play.

There was no one at the back because Faumuina blocked Herring

That's a very good finish from herring

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,076 ✭✭✭✭vienne86

    That was good by Herring.

Bad head clash there with the two Toulouse players.

Ballsy not to take the points, but paid off. Great awareness by Herring.

Ah cmon Kolbe is crouching down big time there, it’s like a high tackle on an ewok.

    Stockdale absolutely done.
The best stepper in the game .. stepped!

Rhea didn’t bother with a tackle either.

  • Registered Users Posts: 548 ✭✭✭MaddChris

Step was good, but what was more impressive was how fast he got back to his feet in those conditions!

Surely someone could have got Kolbe there.

That's an expensive mistake from Stockdale. All the momentum and 3 points gone and try coughed up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,353 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

Kolbe has rinsed Stockdale time and again over the last few fixtures. Not blaming Stockdale either. Kolbe is just that good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,357 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Poor from Stockdale but Rea will have nightmares about that.

22-26 to Toulouse. 71 mins. Toulouse down to 14 men. Ulster with 5m lineout.

That’s twice now that Toulouse have rebound on to the person at the back of the maul. It’s so cynical it really warrants a yellow in isolation.

Now the gamble paid off for them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,730 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

This is an absolutely cracking game.

Calls use it twice then still let's him waste another 5 seconds.

Happens constantly in matches nowadays, wrecks the head.

Disappointing that he gets slightly isolated having made a bit of ground off 1st phase

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,353 ✭✭✭✭Clegg

That would have been a good set play if Ulster had remembered that they needed someone at the ruck to clear out.

I’ve never seen it as blatant, Tekori first and now the 8 just ran around to the back.
