Impeachment doesn't stop him running again. A judgment against him, after the Senate trial, will, or else a standalone motion carried by the House prohibiting him from running.

As things stand right now, impeachment has no effect on his post presidential life (other than potentially making it easier for Republicans to distance themselves from him)

The commentary I am seeing on the US networks this evening is that this is the first impeachment where a judgment is genuinely "in play" (obviously Nixon resigned before this became a possibility).

Bill Clinton's impeachment seems so weak in comparison. On the same basis, Trump should have at least a dozen impeachments by now.

It wasn't the prospect of impeachment that made Nixon resign. It was the inevitable outcome of the subsequent Senate trial.

Impeachments are pretty meaningless in themselves. Its the following trial that is the big deal

I thought the Senate had to back impeachment by two-thirds?

If it's only articles of impeachment, it won't pass.
