CNN are creaming themselves trying to milk it to death. "Coup d'etat", "terrorism". The hyperbole is up to the max.

They are making it seem like the situation is escalating when it looks like people are dispersing peacefully. Embarrassing.

Sure ... CNN is the problem here

    Really?

This is a country that has carried out many, many actual coups in countries across the world, never leading to democracy for the inhabitants.

Americans have really opened up a can of worms by electing Trump, Trump may be gone but his cult following are still in full flow and always will be, he'll constantly be there in the background inciting them, egging them on...then the time will come when they'll elect someone who shares all his ideologies but not his incompetence...that's when things will become truly worrisome.

Those sites are full of horrible people saying horrible things I agree.

But it is no excuse for cosplaying Ghost Recon and storming Capitol Hill or believing conspiracy nuts about election fraud. If you think reddit comments are enough to start a violent coup there's no hope for ya

I'm not saying its an excuse. I think the people who do this tonight are idiots, I can just understand why it's escalated to something like this.

Don't agree with them at all, but they've been egged on by leaders like Trump and his biggest advocates on their side and faced criticism from lots of leaders on the other side as well, and much like the other riots, sh1t has hit the fan so to speak.

His latest video tweet was a chance to calm things down, all he needed to say was go home, but he had to keep it about him and how he lost the election and how great the people breaking into the Capitol were.

    Total nutbag.

He's a psychopathic nutbag. He doesn't care what chaos he causes as long as he gets his own message across that he was robbed of an election and the blame belongs to someone else.

Donald Trump is the ultimate narcissist.

"But we can't play into the hands of these people."

"We love you, you're very special. You've seen what happens, you see the way others are treated, that are so bad and so evil. I know how you feel. But go home, and go home in peace."

Translation: Lads, the National Guard is coming. I know you're mostly white but you're probably going to get nailed all the same.

He is. The myth that police are systematically racist and as such more likely to shoot a black person is just that, a myth.

    https://www.nber.org/system/files/working_papers/w22399/w22399.pdf
In stark contrast to non-lethal uses of force, we find that, conditional on a police interaction, there are no racial di↵erences in ocer-involved shootings on either the extensive or intensive margins.

    https://injuryprevention.bmj.com/content/injuryprev/23/1/27.full.pdf
On average, an estimated 34 people were killed or medically
treated for injury by law enforcement per 10 000 stops/arrests.
That ratio is surprisingly consistent by race/ethnicity.

I mean AOC who isn't a random internet proxy was calling for lists of Trump supporters and donors to be kept tbf, and plenty of videos of trump supporters being harassed. Theres been a lot of dangerous rhetoric on the left around Trump and his supporters and whilst some is fair, a lot wasn't (more so on his supporters than Trump here)

Well that list would sure come in handy to deal with Racoon McTattoo and company.

One group were criminals that were widely condemned. The other group have the backing of the US president plus hundreds of gop senators.

But yeah of course just one side as bad as the other nonsense. This false equivalence is the ultimate way to cop out of this.

I mean the other group has the backing of democrat senators aswell tbf. I'm also pretty sure these ones tonight will be widely condemned.

I do think both sides (at least the extremists on both sides) are as bad as each other though. Probably a good 70% in the middle who just want it to all stop and work and have a life who get caught up it in all then.

This all started with the media's absolutely appalling spin on how the election was going to go.

The polls were pure lies, and enabled by the meida.

Personally I think reports over voter fraud are extremely weak and I'm not supporting DT in trying to overturn the election whatsoever, just to be clear.

However it is clear as day why people are angry. Even some of the most anti-trump meida pundits I know were honest enough to admit that the media were appalling pre election in their bias. One pundit said "You'd think watching both the US and UK meida that Donald Trump would get no votes at all".

Biden only just won the election. He won pivotal states by <1% in some cases, which is why of course it took so long for the final result to be confirmed.

This is in large part due to our wretched western media, Spin Spin Spin. They cannot deny culpability for what has transpired. Of course it's not all their fault but they are bad actors in all this.

I'd put it more down to the electoral college system, though the media doesn't help. He won the popular vote by 7 million votes or something. Not exactly close when you look at it that way, though it doesn't matter due to the EC.

Trump begged Governors to use the National Guard on BLM protestors. These people, after being incited by the sitting US President invaded capitol buildings and tried to interrupt the proceedings laid out in their supposedly beloved constitution so as to renege the results of the recent election.

Trump called for 10 year jail sentences minimum to anyone who damaged federal buildings. And all in relation to people calling for the fair treatment of all citizens.

And you think CNN calling this a coup is embarrassing? It wasn't a coup, it was an attempted coup by the most incompetent President probably in the countries history.

That's utter bollox. If any media are responsible for Trumpists rioting over an election they think was stolen from them, it's the media who convinced them they were going to win, the media who blew up stories about fraud based on nothing.

You hear a lot about America being the greatest democracy in the world and all that jazz but the real story is its a country full of right and left wing nut jobs. Hopefully Biden can unite them but I seriously doubt it.

I take it you didn't actually read the abstract nor the retraction at the top of the article!!!

"Despite this correction, our work has continued to be cited as providing support for the idea that there are no racial biases in fatal shootings, or policing in general. To be clear, our work does not speak to these issues and should not be used to support such statements. We take full responsibility for not being careful enough with the inferences made in our original report, as this directly led to the misunderstanding of our research."

Been huge problem in the US dating back to early 90s when Clinton was first elected.

You have seen Republicans moving further and further to the extreme right and Fox News/talk radio and in recent years youtube and social media further indoctrinating millions of Americans. Trump been elected was just the result of 30 years where lies, conspiracy theories, overt nationalism was left to go unchecked.

Why? It's a show of force, designed to stop exactly what we are witnessing. They were criticised for taking this approach, so they take a hands off approach and get criticised again (by the 'left' in both instances). They can't win.

They literally opened the gates to these terroists and then took selfies with them

A perfect example of just how insane the US is right now. Members of a domestic terrorist mob taking selfies with the police meant to deal with their criminal behaviour.

Trump may not have caused all the problems of the US today but he accelerated the decline of the country. Whether Trump carried out his actions at the behest of those he is in thrall to or he's just burning the world to hold off the inevitable consequences of his lifetime of cons and crimes; the end result is the same. It will take years for the US to recover it's standing in the world.
