Covid-19 Vaccines in Limerick

It has been asked for after the closing of the "Coronavirus in Limerick" thread. I'm going to open this now for discussion of the Vaccine in Limerick.

There is already talk in the news about UL having a possible role in the vaccine rollout.

    https://www.limerickleader.ie/news/news/596128/university-of-limerick-could-be-used-as-mass-vaccination-centre-for-rollout-of-covid-vaccines.html

    https://www.live95fm.ie/news/live95-news/ul-could-be-used-as-mass-vaccination-centre/

I would like this thread to not go down the path of the previous one. There are a couple of basic rules that I think should apply. If anyone has an issue with a rule, please let me, or one of the other moderators know.
    1. Traveller Bashing. If you see an article online saying according to statistics, x y and z are not taking up the vaccine, we can discuss it.
    2. Personally identifying people for whatever reason. (I heard the troll that lives under the bridge in Meelick won't take the vaccine)
    3. Look at the title. There are other places to discuss other things. If it's not Covid-19 Vaccine talk in Limerick, please take it elsewhere.
    4. Chit chat. If you find yourself in a back and forth talk about something, take it to personal messages.
    5. Be nice

I think it would be great if UL was involved.

The field hospital in the Arena, from what I hear, was lovely. The staff were wonderful and the patient I knew of there loved it. The university has trainee nurses and doctors and other paramedics on site who would benefit hugely from the experience of helping out the fully qualified medics administer the vaccine. There is lots of parking and lots of space.

Win-win all around. And hopefully they will get through the mass vaccination faster.

I know of at least one company in Limerick that has created a Covid vaccination taskforce which will help vaccinate employees and their families when the various vaccines are approved. That should take some of the burden off the HSE so great to have that.

Also I understand people want to move past Covid but I would urge people to stay informed of local figures via the Limerick Leader etc. It is still important to take precautions and be sensible as it is still very much in the community. Digging our heads in the sand and being ignorant will not help bring this pandemic to an end.

The latest I've heard is that the BioNTech vaccine will be approved by the EMA tomorrow with rollout across the EU to happen on the 27th... Why the 6 day delay is beyond me but they're you go

Logistics? They imported specialist fridges last week for the vaccine even though it hasn't been approved yet.

2 weeks ago I think they did that... In fairness we could have moved the vaccines from Belgium to the various member states since then and had them ready for injecting by tomorrow...

So now that the vaccine is finally approved after an unnecessary delay it's only another 6 days until the first inoculation... Why this delay? Nobody knows...

I'd recommend asking in 1 of the Covid forums as this delay isn't specific to just Limerick rather to the whole EU/Country

Was there anything communicated as to how they chose Dublin, Cork and Galway for the initial vaccinations? Trying to figure out why UHL wasn't included.

Limerick and Donegal, 2 of the worst affected areas of the country at the moment but cork is put ahead of both, beggars belief really

How soon can regular people get it?

I'd say September at the earliest! Hoping that as a carer for a special needs sister I can bump up the list but otherwise I'll probably be in the last batch.

I live with my parents who are both in the 3rd category, but I'm in the 14th. Wonder how that'll work.

Your parents will get it before you is how that's going to work. What else would you suggest? :)

Not sure but hopefully you get sorted! I'd like to think that after all the vulnerable were sorted they'd open it up to anyone that was willing!

I would have thought anyone in the household with vulnerable people would also be vaccinated tbh. Not saying I want it before anyone else, I'm willing to wait my turn.

Why? Once the vulnerable people have been vaccinated, it doesn't then matter to them if you get it.

That's only assuming that only vulnerable people can become seriously sick or even die from it

Anyone can end up in hospital, but it's way less likely in someone who's young and has no underlying conditions. The plan for the role out is that the people most likely to end up in hospital or even ICU get vaccinated first. It's irrelevant who you live with, you wait your turn as decided by your place on the plan.

The vaccine isn't 100% effective, so it would matter.

But we don't know if the vaccine inhibits transmission. The only data we have is that it protects the recipient from severe disease, to a certain degree. In the context of the question posed; the vulnerable will be protected in that household.

There's a dedicated thread in the main COVID Forum about vaccines, I'd recommend any questions about the actual vaccines or the administration of same to be posted there as there's a lot more experts there, this forum is for Limerick discussions only, this thread is for Covid-19 Vaccines in Limerick.

Nursing homes are starting on the 15th but I believe they have to be Covid free for 30 days first1
