Just got an update for the covid tracker app. Now displays info on the vaccine roll out.

Currently says ( 7th Feb) 153,654 first dose and 86,833 second dose.

The cost isn't the issue, the issue is if the country get the doses they require.
Ireland needs ~10m doses. If Pfizer/BioNtech deliver them in 1,666,667 vials and we can only extract 5 doses per vial then we are short 1.667m doses.

Probably none did that, but it's what they should have done, in my opinion.
Each vial has a certified content of at least 5 ml, it's on the label, and each dose is 1 ml.
If a batch of vials had less than 5 ml, then the buyer could have argued about it. If from each vial I can take 6 or 7 doses, well, it's nobody's fault and we're all happy with it.
It's the same thing when you buy food or beverages. You pay for the content, not for how many meals or glasses you get from a package.

Exactly!
If a chips package has less content than it is on the label, nobody complains too much, but if a medicine is short you can call the manufacturer and ask them for explanation.
Because it's a medicine, you expect that the content in a vial is exactly what is labeled, so paying for a vial shouldn't give us any surprise. If the vial has a higher content is good for us, and it's likely each vials have a higher content. Which is why they should have signed for vials rather than for doses.

Maybe to keep certain people happy and frothing at the mouth?

Even if travel was allowed in a few months time it doesn’t mean the fines would not still be introduced for a few months until we get cases down and people vaccinated. A 2000 fine isn’t an accurate gauge of the future.

I think you have an issue with people travelling to “ Lanza” Covid or not for some reason.

Going by AZ's past record of getting plants up and running properly, I would imagine it will be Q3 before we see anything.
I think the EU should forget about increasing AZ doses and instead focus on increasing the mRNA capacity further.
It's easier to tweak for variants and is already starting from a higher efficacy.

The other vaccine could well be J&J instead, especially with the attraction of the single shot.

It's the 70s we are not doing because the mRNA vaccines are a lot more effective in that group but some over 65s will probably get it.

There's a difference between "approving for use" and choosing to use instead of a higher efficacy mRNA vaccine if available.

The WHO hasn't advised that it be treated equally to Pfizer for example.
