Consistently showing very cold uppers on Sunday in the post frontal unstable airmass . Should be some fairly ok shear available with some convergence aiding the instability giving decent lapse rates. Temps fairly low , would expect quite a few heavy hail showers again and thunderstorm potential could be widespread. Cold night following into Monday with more hail and thunderstorm potential

Nice write up here (for those that might have an interest) on the 10 year anniversary of what was one of the most severe tornado outbreaks in modern US history (May 22nd 2011)

    https://blog.weather.us/a-most-disastrous-tornado-ten-years-ago/

And came across this real time footage from this event which does nothing but show just how terrifying it is to be in the direct path of an F5:

Incredible to see how dark it is outside in that vid and it only the late afternoon, not to mention the unnerving sound of the tornado before it hits...

I remember watching live news coverage of that storm as it was happening, a reporter showed up to film the aftermath and was in total disbelief at what he came across, the town looked like the aftermath of a nuclear explosion

I think this might have been it

And people complain about Irish weather. They actually whine about how bad Irish weather is. Most of them have never seen an MCS right above their heads, unlimited energy right there. And they complain about a bit of rain and few puffs of wind.

Convective weather overview for Sunday 23rd of May 2021

The post-frontal environment will be characterised by cold air aloft overspreading SSTs and diurnal heating inland. Scattered showers are likely to develop over Ireland, and given 300-500 J/kg CAPE and modest cloud-layer shear then some sporadic lightning seems likely. The strongest cells may produce hail 1.0-1.5cm in diameter and wind gusts of 40-50mph. Overnight, the risk of showers expands eastwards into southern and western Britain with an ongoing risk of a few lightning strikes near coasts and offshore primarily (10-15% chance).

You have 2 nice cells up there

The Valentia sounding (launched 11Z) shows a few hundred J/kg of CAPE already present down there at that early time. With some further surface heating inland during the afternoon we could see 1000 J in some spots of the south midlands and east. Strong shear too.

Blitzortung.org used to be very good for showing strikes but lately doesn't seem to be detecting much. Anyone know why?

I noticed the same thing. Their coverage seems to have disimproved a lot in recent times. I now find https://www.netweather.tv/live-weather/lightning much better.

Thunder in Clonmel now pitch dark.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,441 ✭✭✭cml387

Much rumbling in Clonmel. Too bright to see any lightning though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,193 ✭✭✭lucalux

Thunder and lightning in south Roscommon now.

the hail moved in first, a decent covering of that on the ground and just easing off now.

Nothing on netweather/blitzortung yet (have definitely noticed they are not as up to the minute in the past year or so. Used to be instantaneous coming up on the map)

Edited to add Blitzortung has one strike marked west of Lough Ree
