We're 50 hours from kickoff now (well, 8 mins away) so presuming no citing. I can't really believe that but there we are.

I seriously wonder have the RFU paid off the refs or have they some serious dirt on world rugby?

I thought the Launchbury tackle in the air and the missed KO v France was bad but this takes the biscuit.

I thought Wood did a text book clear out but he should be cited because this is the world we operate in now, you just can't make contact with the head area. Vdf should be annoyed because he should have had his head down jackling that ball first thing I was taught as a 7 was never look up when on the ball...your gonna be targeted by the cleaners... Also people must consider wood had alot of bodies and legs in his way and that effects the height at clear out. If those legs aren't there he can get closer to the ruck and lower his body height. He would have had to dive into the ruck to lower his height from my recollection of the event.

Its not textbook because he hit VDF in the face...

His approach was text book in that he didn't leave his feet until after contact, he wrapped his arms and had good height. I've already stated he should be cited but I don't think there was any malice in it. For the people saying im blaming VDF I'm just saying he should protect himself better in the ruck especially when his hands are on the ball in a ruck because if someone came in there like a lunatic he could have lost his head.

VDF should protect himself how? Hire a few bodyguards?

This was 100% on Tom Wood. Stop blaming VDF

Keith Wood on Off The Ball just now saying “straight red”.

The logic here is hard to understand tbh.

He made one very good point

If contact to the head was an automatic red, players going to the ruck would slow down their entry. Makes sense.

Also, BOD gone very quiet since Saturday on social media

Quinlan was absent from Newstalk this morning as well.

BOD  and I’m a Leinster fan!

Quinlan was on the rugby slot

    That’s it a nutshell.

Dr Bennet Omalu - the Medic credited with discovering CTE - was on Newstalk a few years ago and talked about how (in his opinion) rugby was inevitably going to have the same concussion issues as American Football. It looks like it’s here in a big way now. He also talked about the impact it was having on underage participation in the US, and how inevitably that would happen here with rugby too. Failure to punish incidents like yesterday’s will inevitably speed up that process.

The problem with many ex-players as pundits is they don’t appreciate how much the game has evolved and moved on - this is true of many sports, not just rugby. The comments mentioned are reflective of that., sadly.

They’re kinda in the above territory now, with Joe’s “certain homes in South County Dublin” comment.

Was he? I missed the 7:30 slot but listened to the sports news at 8:30 and it was Shane Coleman and a member of the Dublin women’s team. No Quinlan.

Not trying to be overly pedantic etc here but there’s no “rugby slot” per se, it’s supposed to be (in theory at least) a total sports section.

That aside, did he comment on the Wood/VDF incident?

came here to post about Wood too. probably the best take i’ve heard from an ex-pro so far, good to hear.

They rotate people in and out based on the sport. Quinlan was on to discuss the HC action.

“Well actually....” I think you’ll find Quinlan is (supposed to be) the main sports host on Newstalk Breakfast.

And hit VDF in the face so its a red card. I dont care if there is malice or not, pretty simple, VDF isnt dipping and is hit in the face, no mitigation, red card.

    Newstalk Breakfast isnt OTBAM.

Quinny does some of the sports coverage on the radio brekfast show with ciara kelly etc in the morning not Off the Ball which is online only in the morning

    No it’s not.

Newstalk Breakfast and OTBAM are two completely different shows.

    OTBAM isn’t even on Newstalk.

Agreed. I think they'll still call it a mid range but will get his 4 weeks chopped in half for all the usual reasons

4 weeks down to three for Wood

  • Fair. Was an insane decision from the ref and people trying to handwave it was embarrassing.

    It sure was.

Here's a thought though, imagine if Leinster lost on the day? That's why getting these decisions right are so important at the time.

Reasonable call. Suspect the ref will find himself downgraded for the next round of European matches.

Getting these decisions right is important for player safety.

The incident didn't have an impact on the match outcome in this particularly case. Its not a competition issue, its a safety issue.

BOD partially rolled back on it on OTB the other day

If I was cynical I'd almost say he's tailoring his opinion an the person hiring him at the time

You don't need to be cynical to say that, it's plain as day!

At this stage I've no interest in what BOD says on this stuff. In the middle of the revelations about the early onset dementia stuff he came out on OTB to say he's had to review his old "games gone soft" attitude in light of how clearly important the player welfare issues. He said all thenrighr things to suggest he understood how serious this stuff is. And then in the next live scenario he had to comment on it he said that if a player can't hit a player anywhere else then he has no choice but to hit him on the head. Maybe he is tailoring his statements to his employer/audience. Either way it doesn't matter. His position can hardly be relied on. So best not to listen at all.

In fairness to BOD, if he was fire and brimstone about it, our counterparts in England would be giving out that he's a one-eyed Leinster has-been who's always going to see whatever suits the Irish.

In fairness to BOD, if he was fire and brimstone about it, our counterparts in England would be giving out that he's a one-eyed Leinster has-been who's always going to see whatever suits the Irish.

Why does he have to be fire and brimstone? Why do we need to have either complete vindication on one side and complete vilification on the other? Why can't he say something like

"While I have some sympathy for Wood in this situation, I think we are all aware now of the dangers of hits to the head. By the letter of the law that's a red card, and given what we now know about head impacts it probably should be a red card. Its hard to know how yo manage this going forward but we can't allow for head collisions where they can be avoided."

This is factual, balanced and fair. It isnt even close to fire and brimstone. And if people want to react badly to that then thats on them, not BOD. Plus BOD himself would be clearly on the right side of it. Instead he's getting grief from people and is on the wrong side of it.

There is a middle ground though. Heaslip on C4 was nowhere near harsh enough on it but was very surprised it wasn’t at least a penalty. Jim Hamilton said it should have been red (fitz equivocated more). I think it still
    Reflects poorly on BOD.

Drico has a fairly large blocked users number I suspect, doesn't seem to take any criticism well.
