Why are they in such a panic? Could it be that it's a lot more serious than the public have been told?

At least we can depend on the WHO.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/trump-world-health-organization-who-blame-coronavirus-pandemic-2020-4%3famp

It's more infectious...more people will get sick at the same time and therefore the pressure on national health systems could prove too much so EU countries don't want that burden on their health systems.

It's been around since September so if it brought on more severe illness we'd surely know by now.

Who knows, maybe there is some politicking going on as well, although I'd hope that isn't the case

Did this come from ferries or eur channel? The outbreak is near ports Dover and wexford..

Wexford outbreak was linked to a funeral which attracted large numbers from numerous international locations. I suspect Rosslare was not particularly relevant.

AFAIK we do not at this stage have any outbreaks involving the "UK" variant

Looks like the Netherland's may be following France and banning accompanied freight. Going to be a big impact for UK supply chains.

This is a disaster for Irish supply chains.

Sky news running with the headline Europe puts the UK into isolation.

    They are unbelievable.

    They are unbelievable.

    Why? It's accurate but sensationalist

All feeds into the Brexit narrative.

Truth is the UK put themselves into isolation because they have handled this whole pandemic appallingly from day 1.

We didn't go from "we can never close borders" to "we just close borders now" over ongoing poor management.

    I don't get your problem.

Is that not EXACTLY what is happening?

this new variant is more than 70 per cent more transmissible

The United Kingdom on Sunday broke its daily coronavirus case record, recording 35,928 new cases.

New variant potentially increases R number by 0.9, not 0.4 as first reported. Came out of the cobra meeting today. Makes sense why countries have shut off from the UK, this would see massive global spread again. Cut off and get the vaccine in their quick fast. 500k out of 66 million isn't enough.

I don't think we ever got our R number to .4 and it was actually .93 so even if our regular covid r number was .5 in a lockdown, this variant would keep cases growing in that lockdown.

Watch the supermarkets run out of fresh food here very quickly.

This new turn of events is quite staggering really.

    Nearly feels surreal?

A "vaccine" which was developed in mere weeks, and the safety of which absolutely cannot possibly be guaranteed long-term? And yet you want to handcuff people and forcibly inject this unknown substance into them? Utterly appalling.

You prefer people to get infected with an equally unknown virus? What are the long term impacts of covid?

Don't have a link to a study, sure where would I get that so early?

Could there be a possible link between the UK being the first to roll out the Pfizer vaccine and the first to observe this more contagious strain of Covid?

    Probably not?

Watch the supermarkets run out of fresh food here very quickly.

This foolish narrative has been touted by the likes of you at every step since day one of Covid and it never happened.

It's still not going to happen just like your predictions of the "end of the economy" and the "riots" you told us would happen.

Stop panicking, calm down, grow up and don't lean towards scaremongering. Commerce & Freight will continue to operate and fresh food will remain available.
