I'd imagine that would be quite hard. Like the Tour de France goes on for weeks. I presume there are other similar races, and maybe more again that are not as prestigious, and then the training down on top of it. I'd say it would be hard to have another job along with cycling.

Pro cyclists are really in it for the love of the sport, not the money. Taking the Tour de France as an example, it's a three week long race, with only two rest days along the way. Regular (i.e. non-time trial) stages last around 4-6 hours each day. The overall riding time for the finishers, which usually includes stages in the Alps and Pyrenees along the way, is almost 90 hours in the saddle, so an average of 4+ hours a day across all terrains. For putting yourself through all that misery the winner picked up EUR 500k last year. For winning an individual stage you would only pick up EUR 11k, down to EUR 300 for 15th. For winning the green jersey (points classification) Sam Bennett collected a princely EUR 25k. And then all the prize money won over the course of the Tour by a team is generally pooled and shared among the team. Compare that to the most recent Wimbledon in 2019 where the singles winners won £ 2.35m, or the prize money for the Masters held in November where Dustin Johnson pocketed $ 2.07m.

I suppose it's one of those odd sports where there would be a large following but given that's it takes place on public roads, it's not like you can sell tickets to it like you can Formula 1. There has to be a cutoff in what comes in from sponsorship and advertising etc.

Did you guys think it was salary per year or something?

I was gonna say £500 and then though, jesus surely they'll get more than a random grunt at a computer for a week. Apparently not.

Molly I think it would scare someone if they went about analysing the answers that we've had the last 10 days, like genuinely traumatise them and the make them worry about the human race

No. I genuinely was thinking footballers get paid loads, rugby players get paid loads, etc, so cyclists must too! I guesstimated his yearly salary at €300,000!

I am currently reading a book called "The lean dairy farm", anyone who has worked in industry is probably aware of the lean concept.

One chapter is about waste, what % of a farmers everyday work is waste?

Because I'm feeling good this morning I will give you a hint, it defines anything that doesn't add value as waste

    You're welcome

    Is this dairy farm specific?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,631 ✭✭✭Mollyb60

I (probably along with anyone else who did business studies at college) learned about Lean techniques. That will not help me with my answer. At least it can't be more than 100% right?

I thought Green had turned a corner and was giving reasonable questions.

How many farmers does it take to kick a tyre. Is there value in tyre kicking.

Okay, you might need to clarify this for me, I'm having a slow day, and it might be another silly question.

Are you asking what % of their work is wasted, as in they needn't have bothered doing it, or what % of their work in dealing with waste products?

If you mapped out all processes for a farm day what percentage would this book classify as waste

Please teacher, could you phrase that (yet) another way?

You can see from the post above how thick challenged I am by these difficult questions.....

Kolido, a very simplistic example of what the concept of lean means - at least on how we use it in finance.

Say, you sell a product or a service. Part of selling this product/service could include some admin tasks, for example issue an invoice or contact a customer etc.
This particular task doesn't add any real value to the product/service that you sell, but it has to be done in order to complete the process i.e. if you don't issue an invoice you won't get paid.
    Hope that makes sense :)

P.S. Having said that I can't think of what could qualify as a waste in a farm. So, another guess.

I think it's what's percentage of a farmer's work could you cut out without reducing the quality or quantity of the output? How much time could you save with clever little alterations to how things are done?
