To those reporting thunder and lightening, how in meteorology terms is that possible with snow/sleet?

Did you never hear of Thunder Snow it is very common

Mullaghaneany (627 metres) snow last March. Was about a foot deep, frozen solid and had laid about since February/late January weeks after the last snow had melted even at 300 metres.

I am sure that hill would have a semi permanent covering of snow in winter.

This might be the one I would think, powerful ,great pictures and video and follow up shots of the pole damage.

It actually looks like upward lightning when you see the damage of the poles and the amount of strikes at once.

    Where's the pole picture?

Dont really understand much about lightning but this year we have had 2 massive thunderstorms at the end of June and today. 80kph winds all day and branches everywhere

Drove up the m1 northbound there near dunleer exit. Sudden onset of a heavy snow shower for about 5km. Traffic slowed to 30km/hr.

And yet not a flake fell in Dunleer isn't it mad how localised the showers were. Collon was bad too

I was woken after a much needed long, deep sleep by hard rain ? on the windows and a screaming gale around 2 am.

It could have been thunder etc but the gale out here is so loud, and the rain etc battering on the windows.

And I have no idea what fell here etc until daylight. The gale is sealing the door.

I am glad you have had all the weather tonight! It makes fascinating reading..

Looking on traffic cams and surface temps the snow seems not to be melting. Oddly.

Seen snow plough enroute to work so that must be the case.

There's no snow in Dublin (except higher ground). Calling it "sleety rain" is even pushing it, more like cold rain with the odd whiteish mushy globule of disappointment.

Yes we got lucky alright in Dublin. Still very cold though

What is the snowline with this current precipitation band? I am concerned it will wash away the snow further up.

Change of wind direction to a more northerly track made it louder for sure.

Same here. The hailstones made quite the din.

Really high gusts up here now - I hate northerly wind someone tell me it's veering west ... It's a day for the fire and headphones :)

Snow seems to be surviving the heavy rain bizarrely.

What's the rest of the mountain like do you know?

I don’t know but bizarre for the snow to survive that heavy rain.

Woken up by a what can only be described a roar outside just after 6 this morning. Freaky. Bedroom is north facing also.

Sunshine is nice when it does come out on occasion today. Plenty of piddly light, pointless showers also ensuring that the place stays saturated.

I remember last year it rained (after snowing) heavily at 2c and had very little impact on the snow.

Compacted snow especially can be hard to get rid of, even by heavy rain.

I could have sworn I heard rumbles of thunder at 3:30am last night in Navam, but nothing came up on the lightning map.

Plus if the temp was 2c then dew points would have been lower likely close to 1c so would be a very slow thaw with cloud cover no sun.

A northerly would back west and veer east. Just sayin':D

Still from last nights video, looks like an explosion.

Turns out one of the houses was hit in the estate. Some electrical damage, hopefully nothing structural.
