Some friends of mine in Germany took delivery of a new Ioniq 5 Thursday last week. Yesterday, they went to start the car & it was totally dead meaning it had to be towed away back to the garage. Seems the 12v battery was dead. They didn't hear the reason yet but think they'll be looking at the car with suspicion forever more now.

I cannot understand why all manufacturers aren't using Lithium 12V batteries. I suppose cost, but surely reputation is worth the bit extra?

Unlikely to be a battery problem per se. There was a known problem with the car running down the 12V battery. I thought it had been fixed with a software update.

Hi all, I haven't really been kept up to date with any news regarding ioniq 5. Could someone gives an overview of this ICCU issue and has Hyundai reach out officially to customers yet?

We got our ioniq 5 back in Feb 2022. So far we haven't had any major issue(touch wood). Are there any sign to look out for with this issue?

12v battery terminals are often disconnected while cars are en-route from factory or sitting in distribution yards. Dealers should re-connect them as part of PDIs.

Quite possible that the terminals are disconnected or loose, so the 12v battery just went dead as it wasn't getting charged.

Have read about it happening on cats from multiple different brands.

    Hi there.

We had this issue, there is not really anything you can do to pre-empt it. While some report a popping noise, I did not have this, just the warning dashboard alert to drive no further and contact your dealer. In all cases it's a sudden and complete failure.

I gather it's a low but significant (say 2% or similar) chance of failure in Ioniq5 and Kia EV6 cars manufactured 21/22. The fault is global and seems to be the replacement ICCU part is in worldwide shortage, and also needs specialist work to replace. In some markets there is talk of proactive recall (more so with Kia) but mostly is fail and replace.

Hopefully as you haven't experienced it yet you are probably okay.

As I've said on here before, Hyundai Ireland are an unbelievable disgrace. They wanted nothing to do with it, and I say that with direct experience of their senior after sales manager, and their so-called customer care manager.

For them a 4-5 month timeframe to repair is perfectly acceptable. They didn't show any concern, urgency or any apparent control over their supply chain, their attitude was you just wait, and stop bothering us (bother your dealer instead). When I gave feedback they argued back with me and stood over their processes.

It's a shame as the car is gorgeous, and our dealers were 100% awesome. Hyundai seem to be a reliable enough make, but seeing how little they cared when something serious went wrong, we could not ever deal with Hyundai again.

Disgrace doesn't even do justice to how bad Hyundai Ireland, Europe and corporate are!

I was told they didn't want to engage in protracted correspondence and there were process in place to deal with it unfortunately those processes didn't seem to have any built in timelines 🤬.

This should not have been rocket science for them it's a new module to support a new feature (V2L).

Not a surprise to see issues but what is surprising is they have no parts (at this stage chip shortage is not a reason there is starting to be a glut now).

12 to 15 months seems to be when it goes pop if it going to.

Ours is going fine touch wood, missus loves it.

Met an elderly gent last week (Mid eighties) asked us how we liked ours. He told us had to get rid of his, was off the road for 3 months so had to buy a different car as he depended upon it for his work deliveries.

Not sure the details but sounds familiar, pity. Hope Hyundai get their act together, these known cases aren't doing the brand any favours..

Next summer we are thinking about a road trip around Engerland. We would need to carry a roof storage box and also ideally a bike rack.

The car has no hitch/tow bar

Does anyone have any experience of any tow bar brands or companies that install? I am presuming Hyundai is twice the price

Also any experience with roof boxes on the Ioniq5? My car doesn’t have the sunroof

Also if there is anything I should look out for / not to get would appreciate your thoughts

According to posters on the Ioniq 5 subreddit there's now an active recall on the ICCU issue in Europe.

Just checked my VIN and it's showing an open recall.

    Just checked mine there ,

I'll give the dealer a shout later this week and see if it's showing on their system yet. Will also enquire about time to complete and availability of loan car.

Not sure about a hitch but we did use a roof box for a good bit of the summer and it didn't affect the range too much.

The only issue is the car is pretty tall, so loading and unloading was a bit of faff.

The roof bars I used were from a company called Seasucker or something like that. They use industrial suction cups to attach the bars to the car which means they can easily switched between cars.

I would imagine that this is not an easy job, I think the ICCU is located in the worst possible place right in the middle of the car.

I'm gonna wait until my 60k service if I can and just leave the car in for how ever long it takes.

It's only a software change that was implemented in the US so I'd imagine it's the same here.

There's a breakdown of an Ioniq 5 on YouTube and the battery pack can just be lowered from the car and then there's a service hatch to make access easier.

The ICCU unit failed on my car in August. I took it to the dealer and the first problem I had was that there were no parts available and it took two weeks for the part to arrive (I thought it would take a lot longer reading some of the comments on here!). Once it arrived I think they had it fixed within a day or so, fixing it on Friday and then testing it and getting it back to me on Monday morning.

Thanks for the info I will spend some time trawling the internet and check them out

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,024 ✭✭✭Genghis

I'm the poster whose car had this issue in April, got fixed 8 Sept. So sounds like yours failed at just the right time.

Maybe with the recall live stock is no longer an issue and dealers will be able to manage it without depending too much on the diligent after care team in Hyundai Ireland.

Keenly interested in hearing how recalls go, happy no one else needs to experience what we did 😊.

Have mine booked in 16/10/2023 for the recalls. No issue with loan car and they are banking on 3 hours to make sure of the job.

Left car on to charge last night on Zappi from 2-4 cheap rate. Woke up this morning and no power in house. Mains had tripped at 2am. Reset trip switches in house and tried to charge and again house mains tripped again. Tried granny charger but doesn’t seem to be charging but does not trip mains. Have the above screen warnings when start car. Looks like a call to garage tomorrow.

Get it down to your nearest public charger. Test it on the AC and then on the DC.

Rule out whether it’s a car or house issue.

Should I drive it, as manual says refrain from driving when the warning message is displayed.
