    MCG for me.

More interesting and varied history of use than just a football stadium.

MCG. Imagine the place full during an Ashes game. The Camp Nou is great and storied too but those steep stands in Melbourne... I'd just love to be there.

    Camp Nou.
A stadium that deserves its place amongst the famous sports venues of the world.
Its hosted the greats of soccer, close to 100k capacity, cool city, great club

    MCG

Fabulous atmosphere for Ashes and Grand Final

Camp Boy. Great place to watch a match, and it's a symbol of Catalonian independence as much as it's a football stadium. Barcelona really are "Mes Que Un Club".

Melbourne Cricket Ground advances to the quarter final

Pretty amazing since nobody even nominated it, I threw it in myself as a wildcard. Delighted! That concludes Round 3. The 1/4 Finals will take place tomorrow. Keep an eye on your notifications. Stay safe!

Glad 2 of my noms got this far.
Also glad the stupid swimming pool that knocked out the Westfalenstadion is finally gone.

Can we get a list of all stadiums with number of nominations at the end please.
Be interesting to see how far the stadiums with multiple nominations got.

Which means the best football stadium in the world is..

    The Aviva.

    Eh...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,465 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

..and 3 Irish venues in the top 8

I can see Croker going all the way with home advantage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,027 ✭✭✭duffman13

The only one I haven't been too is Monaco, it helps 3 are in Ireland. Not sure on the Aviva being here tbh, although maybe I'm biased by the generally crap atmosphere and the nostalgia of the old Lansdowne. St Andrews is beautiful, just did a tour though would love to actually take in an open championship.

Beijing is incredible and a winner for me. China is my least favourite places to ever go but the Birds Nest is class. Also didnt realise how highly thought of the Curragh is

A the Curragh as a horse racing track is one of the best in the world - its the rest of it that brings it down plus its had the easiest passage - a couple of local pitches and a pub

also its the ultimate Sporting Venue so isn't the Aviva and Lansdowne road the same thing essentially. Otherwise we're looking at "Ship of thesus" (or triggers broom) .
Venues have to reinvent themselves and move as much as possible with the times - I'm treating any outdoor stadium which is on the same location / footprint as the same.

    Great tournament Omackeral.

But folks how the fliuch did we let a fishing tackle shop beat the legendary Thomond Park:rolleyes:

...the Curragh as a horse racing track is one of the best in the world
I'd argue it's not even the best "Irish" track, that's Cheltenham :D
...also its the ultimate Sporting Venue so isn't the Aviva and Lansdowne road the same thing essentially
That's not how I'm voting. Many stadiums have been renovated, so their history remains, but for me Lansdowne was demolished and the Aviva built afresh. The pitch isn't oriented the same way! Depends how you look at it, but I'm never voting on the Aviva's history, I'm treating it as ten years old and a pretty disappointing stadium.

If it wasn't Irish I'd probably like it more! It's just the fact that I want it to be so great, and it falls short of my dreams, that drags it down for me

No American venues - north or south.

Lads and ladies. Quarter final stage kicks off in one hour.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

The draw has been made. Looks like the rub of the green has kept some Irish interests apart. Or maybe that's unlucky?! 20 mins until kick off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,956 ✭✭✭✭Omackeral

As we are now at the business end of proceedings, we will extend the match time to 30 minutes per match. As before, reasons given will be used in the event of a tie. If you feel strongly about your choice or against it's opponent, you should reflect it in your answer or it may not count ultimately!

    It's just better.

Both host a multitude of sports but only one has hosted an Olympics and two World Cups, and it isn't the Irish ground.

I vote for MCG. Its round and historic and full of loud aussies. I've always hated the look of the aviva. From inside the low end look like they ran out of money

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,579 ✭✭✭✭Electric Nitwit

    MCG

It's the best stadium for its sport(s)
Aviva isn't. Hell, it's not even the best stadium in Dublin

I just don't get the love for the MCG.

Cricket is a silly sport. Aussie Rules is daft. So that doesn't swing it for me. It's relatively mundane as big grounds go.

So Aviva for the Shane Long goal linked earlier. Though it's also daft that it's the only football ground left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,035 ✭✭✭BrianBoru00

    MCG.
I think the atmosphere is slightly better and it can facilitate more sports than the Aviva.

  • Registered Users Posts: 520 ✭✭✭hurlingman97

Mcg nicer looking, bigger capacity, has held bigger events.

And I don't like the Aviva

Imo neither deserve a semi final spot

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,343 ✭✭✭✭Zaph

MCG - I just can't get over how stupid the Havelock Square end of the Aviva looks. They may as well have gone the whole hog and not bothered putting any seating there rather than the few crappy rows that they have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,465 ✭✭✭✭Kolido

MCG please, dont know much about it but looks like a better stadium, much bigger and help more important events. Aviva has done well to get this far.

Croke Park - Both have history and are the homes of their respective sports but I've enjoyed many a summer's day and endured many a cold winter evening in Croke Park whereas I've only seen St. Andrew's on the telly - as the GAA themselves say "Nothing beats being there". I'll be sticking with this all the way through seeing as my other regular stomping ground went out in the previous QF.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 52,313 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

    Croke Park

For me personally it's more iconic than St. Andrews. I'm aware that it probably isn't in all actualities but it's a deserving semi finalist for me for the years and years of historic moments - sporting and otherwise within the ground.
